Default Why 3 battery connections on a Leaf battery?

Ok....I'm not an engineer.....but I'm learning about these Nissan Leaf batteries.

I understand (or I think I do) that each Module of these units contain two cells. Each cell has a voltage of 3.8 and these cells are wired in a series to obtain the 7.6-V per module.

Ok....but why are there simply not two electrical connections on each module? Why do we "not" have just a positive terminal, and a negative terminal?

I know I'm missing something simple on this concept.

Any help?

The 3rd is a sensing terminal used by the BMS to balance the cells.
