Default any 4x4 GMC gurus here???

Got a 86 full sized(has seen better days) Jimmy. When I go down the road it makes a funny noise, like a whinning then when I let off the gas it goes away. I tell you this in case it's related to this problem(the big one).I went on the freeway once and just about got to 50 and something was banging like all get out I mean it was shaking and jerking something bad. About a month later(around town seems ok) I had no choice,my truck(other one) was down and so was wife's car.Took her to work(went on freeway and held my breath) and it was ok.Dropped her off, left ,stopped at a light and when the light changed took off ,got about 50 feet and that same violent banging was back. If I had to guess it is almost like the teeth in the rear(or front) end weren't lining up quite right. That or the chain in the transfer case is stetched bad and not always ridin in the chain right. Looked at it today a little and no way I'm trying to take off the cover for the front pumpkin(bolts look like they will round off if I even get a wrench close to them). Jacked it up and put it in 4x4 ,spun the driveshaft and the drivers side front and the pass side rear seem to be turning togather, other two seem to be on vacation, not turning the same speed(slower).I should probably mention it's lifted with 31" tires. I apologise for the long winded post, trying to think of everything(and I know,I forgot something). So my ?? is.....axels or transfer case, where would you start. Truck runs and drives alright otherwise ,doesn't get much use kind of our back up vehicle.Right now, time is my enemy...not enough of it. Thanks for your patience if you got this far.

Think I would take a good look at the U-Joints first... That would be a simple and relatively inexpensive fix, and you certainly don't want to pole vault that thing.

Your violant banging and jump almost sounds like a set of bad auto hubs on the front of your truck.

This was my first thought also.... You can take the front drive shaft out and drive it that way and vise versa with the rear drive shaft.

You may not want to here this but it could be your torque convertor. I had a S-10 back in the day and it was doing something similar and something on the inside of the convertor went bad and it was causing the truck to shake and make a popping noise. I would check out all other options before you go to that extent though.

How about checking the harmonic balancer at the front of the engine? I put a 302 in a Ranger PU (that was a FUN ride!) and it did the same thing as you are describing.

Or, check all the pulleys and belts & make sure they are all tight.

Have fun, Dave

I had a 86 blazer full size and it was doing similar things. The transfer case drive chain was breaking apart and binding in the gears. May not be your problem but worth a look. When I took the drain plug off the transfer case small pieces of the chain fell out. Mine made a crunching noise and sounded like I had a card in the spokes of my bike while slowing down. Pull drain plug and check. Good luck.
