Default Comet 780 questions

Anyone use a 780?

I'm thinking there should be a spacer used between the clutch and the engine. The crankshaft bevel is really close to the engine and the clutch contacts the engine before it bottoms out. I'm thinking a 1/4" or 3/8" spacer?

And when I mount the clutch, I'm assuming I need a really thick washer on the end, what kind of washer should I use? Grade 8? The bolt looks to be 3/8 fine thread.

Also....do I just use the whole key stock piece, tap it all the way in, mount the clutch, then tighten the bolt? Is that it? I'm used to the tapered clutches, never used a straight shaft one. Just want to make sure I do it right. Going to try and fire it up tomorrow.

Use 1" washers to space the sheave about 1/4" from the case cover. I used 5. Use as much key as possible without having to drive the clutch onto the crank. The clutch should slide on with 2 fingers. Fit the key if you have to. You will thank me when it's time to remove the clutch. Just use a large flat-washer and a lock-washer for the center bolt. No Loctite. 1" bolt engagement on the crank.

Don I guess I could have asked you on my other thread, LOL, had no idea you knew about this clutch. Or are all straight shaft clutches pretty much the same? Just figured this one was different than your 94c.

The keyway is way too long, it's about twice the length of the crankshaft. It hangs off a ways. So should I just trim it to the length of the crank?

Cut the key as long as possible without going over the end of the crank. It does nothing for you out there.
