Default need some big block advice

Im wanting to put a twin in my 97 yamaha g16. Im having a hard time finding a used briggs. Trying to keep cost down as much as possible. Will fab my own plate and exhaust. Will the stock yamaha clutch fit and work well with a twin? What are some other popular brand twins to look for? I have a line on a 16hp briggs and was wondering if theres any cheaps mods for more hp?

If you go vtwin, go with the briggs vanguard. The 16hp is what I have, and they are essentially the same as the 18hp version. Lots of aftermarket support for these engines. It won't be cheap to build big power, but for less than $100 you can get the revs up to 5500 rpm safely, and for another $60 you can use a cam from the 23hp version for added power. Beyond that, you're looking at porting and polishing the heads, maybe a little shave on the head for more compression, those aren't expensive if you do it yourself. Stock clutch will work ok but you'll need a tapered adapter for $50. You'll like the comet 780 clutch much better than the stock clutch, but it's almost $300.

Here's my advice. If you are trying to do it on the cheap...don't. You'll end up wanting to do more mods later anyway, might as well do it right the first time.

Used engine: $400
780 Clutch: $285
Belt: $40
Rev Kit: $90
Billet Pushrods: $40
23hp Cam: $60
Equus Tach: $90
Governor removal: FREE
Port and Polish: FREE

Total: $1005

This is the first step most will take with the Vtwin. Pretty much what I'm doing with mine. After that you are talking about big intake and 2bbl carb, roller rockers, big cam, more money.

Are the briggs vanguards different from non vanguards? What Im asking is I found a briggs 16hp on CL for $300 in excellent condition. It states that its a cast iron commercial engine but not sure if its a vanguard.

Great write up thank you. Where in the powerband is the 23hp cam improvement at? And I have 2 brand new belts here would I have to purchase another one if I make an adjustable cradle?

There's a 18 hp in the west Chester Philadelphia cl for $125. It may need a crank and it runs on natural gas...easy changeover....
