need used vanguard advice
I found a used 18hp vanguard engine for sale model #350447 type 1075-a1. I looked it up and it has a tapered shaft (it was off a power washer) will this work on a G2 or do I need a straight shaft? If so is there enough meat on the shaft to have it turned down to a 1" straight shaft? Another thing noticed is it has a16 amp charging system, will this be enough to keep the battery charged and run head lights or would I need to run my stock generator? Thanks for the advice

Yes you can use it but you'll need a 1" crank. I don't think you can use that shaft the way it is. I have heard some have had it machined down. Contact 1989marathon he is the Vtwin machining king. He has built several engines.
The 16 amp will work for standard lights and keeping the battery charged. Don't expect to power anything with high amperage like stereos, spotlights, etc. |

Re: need used vanguard advice
Not all charging circuits are the same. They range anywhere from NONE, to 20amp. You need to find out what you have. Typical is the 16amp circuit, but many generators/washers had none.
The tapered crank won't work with the clutches available. It can be turned down to 1" easily. Then you can either use a taper adapter to mate a stock clutch, or have a 1/4" keyway milled into the crank for the aftermarket clutches. |

I'd have the 1/4" keyway cut into it anyway. If you don't use a 1" clutch the keyway will be there if you do. Can still use the tapered adapter with the keyway.

Re: need used vanguard advice
Thanks guys. Hey 89 how do i find out if it has a charging system? If it doesn't how would I put one in? Slo, I would use the 780 comet clutch, would I still need a keyway cut into it and would I have to shorten and retap the crank

Re: need used vanguard advice
You can start and run the engine, hook the charge coil wire to a battery, and test the output with an amp-meter. I have one made by Greenlee that is like a multi-tester but has a big clamp on one end that measures amps. You might have to load test it. In that case you'll need a tester with a load switch on it like they have at your local auto parts store. Lastly, you'd have to disassemble it and look.

Re: need used vanguard advice
Hey Jeff, Good catch but no, you didn't miss anything. I had looked up the model number for that engine and it said it had 16 amp charger. However the engine has a type number and code number that I cannot find on the internet. I have a feeling that the type and code numbers would reveal the charging capacity of that particular engine. I think when I said it was off a pressure washer that clued Marathon into the fact that the charging system may not be 16 amps or possibly not have one at all.

Re: need used vanguard advice
The "7" at the end of the first 6-digit series indicates that it has a 12v or 24v starter and an alternator.
If it has an alternator, it likely has a regulator mounted to the main shroud, just above the starter. 2 yellow wires, and 1 red. The "7" just doesn't indicate the size of the alternator. Here's a pic of the regulator. |
