Vanguard 18 hp question?
Hi all. I might have the chance to pick up a 18 hp Vtwin. The motor would be coming off of a water pump. Would it have a 1" shaft on it or a tapered? I know a generator uses the tapered but never heard anyone talk about a water pump. Thanks.

Re: Vanguard 18 hp question?
I think it's going to have the tapered shaft. I read somewhere on here that someone had the same kind of engine and it was the tapered. But, depending upon how much you are paying for it, it still might be worth it. You can take that crank out and have it machined to 1" with a 1/4" keyway. You could also swap the crank out. The going rate for a "good" used vanguard is in the $300-$400 range. If it's super nice maybe $450-$500. Just my observations.
Oh, and you won't regret it. |

Re: Vanguard 18 hp question?
So lets say it is tapered and I decided to change it out. Would a crank from a vertical shaft fit? Or one from a 16hp or 14hp work?

Re: Vanguard 18 hp question?
I'm not sure but I dont think the vertical shaft engines cranks are the same, they might be. But the horiz vanguards the 14, 16, 18 cranks are the same. In fact I have a thread on the this if you look at my list.

Re: Vanguard 18 hp question?
The 18 crank is different than the 14 and16. The vertical cranks are different and wont work.

Re: Vanguard 18 hp question?
Yeah I shouldn't have told you the 18 was the same. What I meant was "I think they are". I'm still learning these engines. Very different from the clones.
