finally got my briggs. couple questions
It has a tapered shaft. What clutch kit will bolt onto it? Will the yamaha clutch work? Im gonna get the rev kit. I read where retarding the cam will give better bottom end. Is there any instructions on this? Will i loose top end?

Re: finally got my briggs. couple questions
Congrats on the new Briggs! Which motor did you get?
No clutch will fit a tapered Briggs crank. It will have to either be turned to 1", or replaced with a 1". Retarding the cam will move the power-band toward the top end, not the bottom. |

While you have it apart take the governor out. If you have the money, a 23hp cam is $60 at CPP, will be a good time to install that.

Man I just now had a chance to really look at this motor. Pulled th epulley that was on the crank and its a 1" STRAIGHT shaft!!! The guy gave me aw huge box of brand new briggs parts that are easily worth over $300 and it has an electric fuel pump. Well worth the 2 hour drive I made.

I thought the cam wasnt worth it unless you port the heads? Will a larger exhaust make a difference? Is there instructions on removing the gov? And is it worth it advancing the cam? Do you get more mid or just bottom end?

Re: finally got my briggs. couple questions
You'll still get additional valve lift and duration, any engine will benefit from that. If you have plans on doing that in the future, you may consider doing it now. I don't think it will hurt you, but I could be wrong. I know the performance cams really need more flow, and I wouldn't do one of those without a port job. But the 23 cam might still have some benefit from stock 16 heads.
1989marathon, what do you think about doing the 23 cam without porting the heads, any downside? Nice score! Sounds like things are going in the right direction for you already!!! |
