Default 16hp van. in melex gas cart belt info

I have a melex cart with a 16hp van. That i stuffed in it and paid 100$ for the cart and 250$ for the motor And i was wondering how tight/loose my belt should be. Im new to carts so some info would be greatly appreciated. I have a older comett clutch on it and stock driven pulley. Thanks

stang, when you squeeze the belts together between the clutches they should be 1 1/2 inches apart

Can't see what kind of clutch you are running, but most clutches will tolerate a belt that's pretty tight. You do want some deflection so it will slide in the sheaves at idle. Try and tighten it as far as you can and see how it is then. You don't want any slack in the belt at rest, but when you push on it it should have some give.

Ok so i got to the house and checked the belt and i it way loose i adjusted tighter and big difference in driving. my other ? is about my clutch its a 40 series comet and its kind of rusty...i mean it works and all but rusty in the inside like it sat outside in the rain i was wondering is there any good way of cleaning it up and all....i would think not to use any grease as of the belt and all any advice would be helpful thanks

If that's the 40 series I know, it's a tiny clutch. About 5-1/2" diameter and made for a 7/8" belt. Is that correct?

How wide is the belt? 1-3/16"? I would think that belt would ride right out of the top of the primary when it is completely closed.
I would think that even if everything was working correctly, you wouldn't be able to achieve even 20mph with the setup. Is that correct?

Dang it......ur right it does ride right on top of the clutch but it doesnt ride off of the clutch tho.....i get about 23 mph on my gps...whats a good clutch option for this setup...im mean it does pretty good slings mud and all.....and the belt hasnt ever came off.,would performance be gained with the correct clutch. Thabks for the info
