Default 2008 ez go mpt 1250 big block talk

New to forom. Just finished build on 08 ezgo mpt 1250. Installed jakes front and rear 6" long travel kit. And 24in quad tires. And custom roll cage and rear seat. Also fabbed a track bar and mounts for front disc brakes. Also installed rear discs and 2" spacers. Have not done any engine mods. Thats the reason im asking for advice. Looking for a little more power. We only use it for one camping trip a year for 3 weeks. The terrain is basicaly dry lake bed and sandy. With a few river crossings and hill climbs now and then. Performance on hills was not the best. So we are looking to upgrade the power plant, clutch, and rear end.

So my questions are: What is the best way to go for big block swap? Or can i mod the original motor enough to see performance gains? The kit from jakes includes a clutch is that the best way to go? Or is a quad rear end with chain drive a better way? (Not afraid to do some fab work) if going with belt drive and big block swap does rear gear need to be changed? Also has anyone limited slip kit? And will limited slip kit work with taller or shorter gears? Or can u simply weld rear end together for posi trac?

Help and advice much appriciated

Ok here we go... Answers in red.

"So my questions are: What is the best way to go for big block swap? CPP has a nice kit, expensive but complete and new engine. Or can i mod the original motor enough to see performance gains? Not really all that much. You can mod it, but you're looking at a lot of work for not much power. I'd go Vanguard big block. For serious power you will want to do a cam and 2 barrel carb. The kit from jakes includes a clutch is that the best way to go? No. Or is a quad rear end with chain drive a better way? Again, no. Unless you are wanting to install a street bike engine or something more than 40 hp. The stock EZGO rear end will support a mildly built Vanguard. (Not afraid to do some fab work) if going with belt drive and big block swap does rear gear need to be changed? Only if you want to go faster than 40 mph. With stock gearing that thing will pull the steep hills with no effort. Change gears and low end torque will be reduced, you'll need rpm and speed to climb hills then. Also has anyone limited slip kit? And will limited slip kit work with taller or shorter gears? Yes a limited slip is available. Check with some sponsors. They should work with any gears, again check with the sponsors for fitment. Or can u simply weld rear end together for posi trac?" It can be done, but I would not recommend it. Very unsafe on pavement, will wear tires, and might fail. I'd go with the L.S.

I'll give you my opinion. If you compare to the stock engine, a stock 16, 18, or 23hp Vanguard will feel like a monster. It will be enough if you like to keep things stock, it'll get the job done. However, most guys will at least put a rev kit and timing advance key, and remove the governor parts. This will allow you to rev up, and maybe past 5000 rpm safely, but power will be mostly low end. You can get a cam that will boost power in the mid and high rpm range, but you'll want to port the heads. If you go that far, a 2 barrel carb will give you more power and rpm. You can go beyond that, but I don't know if that would be wise in a golf cart. Also, get a performance primary clutch designed for the Vanguard, say the Comet 780 or the Team Industries roller clutch. A good secondary clutch is a must. If your's is old, get a performance secondary clutch, that will help with climbing hills and towing loads. I think the CPP kit comes with a Primary clutch.

I have a bone stock 16hp Vanguard in mine. I love it. It's hard not to peel gravel and grass all the time LOL. But it runs out of power around 3500 rpm. So I'm on the hunt for some parts. I have had stock engines, modded stock engines, a HP Clone big block engine, and now the Vanguard big block. By far, the best goes to the Vanguard. It's not as fast on the top end as my clone was, but the low end punch is double! I've heard that the Vanguards can get "scary fast".

Unfortunately alot of my build pics and how it started its time with me were stolen with my last phone. I got it as a consesions cart with the drink carrier on the back which i plan on turning into a trailer to tow behind it. Right now im mulling over doing motor stuff.....part of me says if it aint broke dont fix it....its only goten stuck a couple times and not for long just had to empty the three adults and give her a little shove up the hill....happy with the jakes kits a little stiff on the shocks....kinda want to see if there is a piggy back adjustable swap for those but its a great cart....few more pics from before lift for you and after

Slo thanks for your reply. You confirmed a lot of my thoughts on the matter. My only follow up question is if getting a big block why not a 20 or 24? Will they fit? Or is an 18 the way to go and mod it?

If you've got the $, and you want to be driving it today, the CCP kit is the way to go. I've got the 23 with the cam and rev kit and couldn't be happier. Installation in the Yamaha was easy, and when I eliminated the 2nd throttle cable and ran straight from the pedal to the carb, it made all the difference in the world. Plenty of torque for the trails, and top end of 35+. More than enough speed for me. If you're buying new, go as big as you can.

I agree. You won't believe how much power it has, even if you go with the 18 hp kit. CPP offers an 18hp and a 23hp. From what I understand, the 23 hp makes more power, but higher in the rpm range, and the engine is taller. The size may not matter in some cases. If you want to build it yourself, not from a kit, you can find lots of 16hp engines out there for $300-$400 used. But that CPP kit, I've heard, makes install super easy!

Ok excuse me for being a newb but cpp is cartpartsplus? And we leave the cart at our vacation spot so it makes it hard to work on i have to order All! The parts i need and drive up there for the weekend. From what ive been reading in order to do a governer delete i would need a rev kit. Not a rich guy but we are already 7k into this cart. So at this point might as well do it right cause its not exactly an investment lol. So what all do i need to do it right

Here's the sponsor's page. Yes CPP is Cart Parts Plus. I've purchased a few things from them, they always ship very fast on in stock items. I have also done business with Vegas Carts and Performance for all my clone parts. They are also good to deal with, very helpful with tech and install questions.
