94 CC Carryall 2 Van18 hp Motor Swap help needed.
Well, I picked up a Vanguard 18hp motor with a Comet 780 clutch today. Traded an old dirt bike for it. So I have a ton of questions!!!!!! I am new to golf carts. I bought a new house with 1.5 acres and use a 48v cart now to haul trash cans, cement blocks, tools, tree stumps and such. It's my "tractor" for my property. My current FE350 ended up having only 35psi compression today when I tested it. Bought this one to replace my 48v Yamaha. Tired of charging batteries.
So here's the skinny... I need to swap the motor. After looking at CPP I noticed I need a wiring harness, motor mount, lift kit, and pipe..... I would eventually like to take this cart with us to the desert/dunes when we go on vacation. I have looked at the long travel kits and boy are they spendy!!! Is there also a oil filter relocation kit so when changing the oil I don't get it all over my frame? My property is really hilly, rocky and uneven... 1. What's a great lift kit for what I want to do? I would like to have the most comfortable ride cause....I only wanna buy one kit and I need to keep my wife's comfort in mind as well. 2. Is there an instruction manual I can get ahold of for doing this swap? 3.I would like to not have a loud pipe as I would like to respect my neighbors so what's a good choice? 4. Should I replace my rear clutch or just do the spring upgrade? 5. Last but not least, what all do I need to do this engine swap? I don't wanna lift a wrench til I have every last nut and bolt and part to do the entire job. O, one last one....6. Is the lift kit necessary? From what I have tried to find info on, I think the motor sits lower so I need a lift....Right? I apologize for not doing more research using the forum tools but my time is really limited and wife is like.....Dude, you've had this cart for 3 weeks now....when is it gonna be done? I need my cart!!!! If any other info is needed, please let me know, I will try and answer what I can with my limited knowledge. Still learning, new to this, but excited to maybe create a work machine I could use for family outings as well..Vinny Also, I know my car is a Carryall 2, but do I buy parts for a DS for it? Kinda lost on all the different models. Last edited by Vinny73; 12-06-2014 at 09:25 PM.. Reason: DS, Precedent, Carryall ? |

Holy Bat-****! That's a lot of words!
Congrats on the 18 Vanny, but you're going to have to spoon-feed us the questions in little bites. Most of us don't have the attention span to answer 5 or more questions at once. Sorry about that. |

That's a really short question with a really long answer.
There is a lot to consider. Is the motor turning the correct direction for the cart to move forward when in FWD? Mounting the motor and having proper clearance. Feeding fresh air to the motor. Proper clutching and proper belt length. Throttle hookup and proper throttle-cable ratio. Wiring. Charging circuit. Starting circuit. Kill circuit. Can you see where this is going? It would take a very long time to give a response that could answer that question. All of the above areas have been covered, and can be found easily with the search function. It's just not all in one place. |

In my opinion, this is not an easy task. The engine swap is way more involved than most people realize, especially when not using a kit. Fabbing the engine mount is a tough task to do properly and reliably. Fabbing a suspension that works well and is safe is even more difficult.
But.....it can be done. My advice? Don't be in a hurry. Don't be afraid to spend money on the important stuff. Do your research. Ask lots of questions....ONE AT A TIME PLEASE!!! Really this is not a project for any beginner. If you NEED the cart right away, why not rebuild the current engine and use the cart as is, and build it slowly? |

Well, all points taken with a grain of salt. I thought I was asking questions though!!? I'm not looking to fab anything. I do have a good mechanical skill set. I was more looking for bolt on stuff that will make this motor work. As far as motor rotation, I have come to the conclusion that 96 and below CC do not have a conflict with the rotation of transmission/big block motor. I believe that is 97 and above.
If my compression is low on the current engine, is it a simple fact of slapping a new set of rings on or do I need to hone it or bore it and get a new piston set as well? Not looking to spend a fortune on the current motor as it's going to go to the pasture once I get the big block situated. |

You might want to consider selling your 48V cart and buying a gas cart. It's far from trivial to convert an electric cart to gas. The rear end on an electric isn't designed to run Fwd and rev with a regular gas engine. The electric motor runs backwards for reverse. The way the motor interfaces with the rear end is also very different. Before you spend any $$, you need to learn everything there is about this conversion. I myself would not do it.

Vinny, what slonomo and I are trying to say is that there is not really one source that has all the required info in one place. All the info you will need is on this forum. You just have to have a specific question, and either ask it, or use the search function and find the answer.
Asking for EVERYTHING that is needed for a bigblock swap is a very tall order, unless you are buying a kit like the one from CPP. It would take many pages to respond, and we would still miss something. There is actually ALOT more time required to plan a swap than there is to actually perform the swap. Without the planning, and thought process, the swap will take forever. Once you give it some thought, you will start stumbling on some very specific questions that can be answered here. We really do want to help, but you're going to have to help us. Specific, issue-oriented questions will get quick answers. It's better to "eat this thing in smaller bites", rather than trying to "shovel it in". |
