Is a 16hp vanguard worth swapping?
I have a good running 16hp vanguard in my mower that lunched the hydrostat, so the engine is free. The cart is a 92 EZGO Marathon with 23" tires and about 6" of lift. The whole engine cradle is already dropped and moved back 2" in both directions with the lift, so I shouldn't have any clearance issues. I can modify the cradle or build a new one if need be.
The engine is the original Robin 9hp, but I rebuilt it recently. My issue with the cart is lack of torque. I can get 24mph out of it, but it hardly pulls my driveway. I don't really need any more speed, just want it to climb and get up to speed better. I would love to do something bigger, but I have the 16hp and a new engine isn't on my list of priorities right now. Didn't know if anyone was using this engine and if they were happy with it. |

You would have plenty of torque with the V-Twin

Re: Is a 16hp vanguard worth swapping?
You won't get any more top speed from it, but you will double the torque off idle, maybe triple. It will be significant. If you are using your stock clutch, you'll have to cut the crankshaft, drill and tap it, and buy a tapered adapter. If you can afford it, the 780 clutch is well worth it. Very smooth and will be more efficient than your stock clutch, plus you won't have to cut the crank.

You dont think a 16hp twin will get him faster than 24? With a rev kit I would think 30 would be possible.

With that 780 clutch and the 16hp, would I be able to pull a boat trailer around the yard? Right now there ain't a chance of pulling anything
