Default Honda 24 hp for $500 a good deal?

Just had a guy call me back on a honda 24 hp emgine with no starter for $500. Wondering if that is a good deal. The motor has a couple hundred hours on it i think. How easy is it to rebuild these things and how much would it cost? Any help greatly appreciated!

Shouldn't need rebuild if it has been maintained properly. I wouldn't think it could be that expensive.

I think it has been maintained, it came off a bark blower. Guess it does come with a starter now. The guy said he would put one on. So anyone think this is a decent deal, or should I wait?

If it doesn't need rebuilding I'd go for it.

I'm looking for a deal like that right now...........or maybe a vanguard from Tom at CPP...........that's what I really want

Very few performance parts available for the Honda. This does sound like a pretty good deal though.

Note: Lots of stuff available for the Vanguard.

I noticed that, did some lookin on the web and can't find much in the way of Honda stuff. So my next question is how tempermental is the carb if I wanted to fab up my own exhaust? Rejetting might be a issue also if I can't get'm.

Going to need a Honda guy to reply on this one. I would think exhaust would be no problem and carb jets should be available.

Just found Stretch Plastics has a exhaust and intake for the Honda, of course no price. Looks like somethin I could build if the price is too steep.

My question would be why was it taken off the blower.... I don't know much about the honda's but I have seen 24hp sell for a few hundred dollars. I believe it's cause when they need case bearing for the crank you have to buy new cases. I'm thinking those bearings are made into the case like the newer harleys are. again I don't know this for sure but I would check into it if I were you. I've also seen new ones for under a $1000 from time to time so if you have to put some $$$ into it, it may not be worth it. I'm sure most any good small engine shop could tell you about those engines.
