Default Adjustable carb

Dang California smog carb on my engine is not adjustable and honestly seems to be running rich???!! Stumbles and falls all over itself when I touch the gas. I know this is a common problem from all the posts but can anybody tell me a part number for a carb that I can adjust to tune it up. I've found a 2 barrel intake on eBay but I'd like to get by a little cheaper than that setup would cost. Engine has rev kit and gov removed. Thanks.

i would bet your carb is adjusable and if not we can get you one that is , if you look at the carb on the bottom of the square side (flywheel side) your going to have a black plastic cap over the metering screw that cap limits adjustment , if you take a pair of pliers and pull that cap off you will see the metering needle, then you can adjust as needed with a pair of needle nose channel lock pliers then , once adjusted replace the cap as if nothing ever happened, their is a more likely chance though that you need to check your fuel , vanguards do no like ethanol at all and will gum up something fierce in just a few days. either go to pure-gas.org and find non ethanol gas or buy some startron ethanol treatment

Disclaimer: I am not endorsiing, anyone to adjust, bypass or otherwise tamper with emmissions equipment as this would be a violation of carb and or federal emmissions laws

Truly that's the info I wanted to hear. I've tried to pull the cap off but gave up for fear of breaking something. It's really on there. Hard to find non ethanol gas here in the corn belt. I'll look but prob have to try the additive. Thanks for the input!

I would never do this, but I've heard of people using a razor blade to cut through the plastic cap, parallel to the screw, to help get the cap off easier. I've also heard that if it is too hard to cut, holding the razor blade in a pair of vise-grips, and heating it up will help melt the plastic.
True story.

leverage it off with a flathead screw drive at the base you will not damage anything just make sure you figure out where it goes flying

Rich, some just don't want to come off and must be cut, so I'm told.

screw driver prying and needle nose pulling worked well. just had to put a bit more force into it than I was comfortable with. opened it up about one half more turn and lessened the stumble quite a bit. exhaust still pops some when letting off throttle but idles much smoother and rev up is way smoother. all I could tell running it 5 mins in my garage, its 8 degrees outside. ill try to run it some Saturday and get it good and warm then mess with it again. thanks for the help all

oh, theres a flange on the screw that if you squeeze the cap in the middle you are probably grabbing. I gripped it on the ear that keeps it from turning. might be why some people fight it so much like I did
