23hp cam in 18 vanguard
I have been wondering if maybe I installed my cam wrong, I put a 23 hp cam and high rev kit in my 18 hp vanguard and it seems to have a lot of compression. Previously I could use the pull starter and now it is extremely hard to pull. Is this normal or did I do something wrong with the compression release? The motor runs great I just keep destroying starter gears and pull ropes. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on this?
Also I am considering a billet flywheel so I can run a high torque starter, DO you get any performance gains from the billet flywheels? |

From what I was told you loose your charging ablity on the battery with the billet flywheels but they do give you some extra HP. |

I don't think you need a billet flywheel to install the high torque starter...

Re: 23hp cam in 18 vanguard
ive been wrong before and i might be now, but i dont think a billet flywheel adds any hp. you would probably rev faster with less rotating weight and they are definitely less prone to flying apart at high rpms. not sure why you would need one for a high torque starter, ring gear should be the same. no idea about charging.
im guessing you have another issue tho if youre finding it that hard to turn over |

Re: 23hp cam in 18 vanguard
so what high torque starter does everyone recommend for use on stock flywheel with aluminum ring gear?

Here is the one most of us have.

Re: 23hp cam in 18 vanguard
The motor shouldn't turn over any harder with a stock 23 cam than it did with the 18 cam. Does the 23 cam still have the compression release balls in the exhaust lobes? Is the de-compression weight, spring, and pin still installed in the cam?

It had the release balls in the exhaust lobes, not sure what the decompression weight, spring, and pin are, I vaguely remember removing some weights but I thought they had something to do with the rev limiter.
