So I think I grenaded the Honda GX670 in my cart today
So I think I grenaded the Honda GX670 in my cart today. I had a problem some time ago with it backfiring after I'd run it WFO for a bit. I chatted with fstg21 about it who said it was a solenoid, but I never did get on it. At some point I figured out that if I just let it idle for a minute after running wide open, it wouldn't backfire when I cut it off. The thing has a few hours on it, 3+ years with me & about 3 or 4 with previous owner(s).
Anyway, today I was driving over to a buddies place, doing probably 25+ mph, and the had a sudden loss of power, heard shattering, rattling, breaking something, pulled over to the side of the road. No leaks, no open holes or visible damage anywhere. Engine spins over, but doesn't start. This thing never has a problem starting, a little choke & it always fires up. Checked the oil & it looks fine on the dipstick, no metal on it, plenty of it. The rear end is fine, cart rolls, goes in & out of FWD or Reverse easily, obvious it's in gear as it doesn't roll freely. Thinkin I should drain the engine oil & pull the filter apart & see what the oil looks like. So I'm looking for a rebuild kit. Or suggestions on what the problem is likely to be. Any suggestions? |

Maybe you got real lucky and it's flywheel/stator?

Hmmm, tell me more. I was kinda thinking it might be a broken piston or something. The fact that it turns over & hasn't dumped oil everywhere has me hoping it's rebuild-able.
I have the engine lose now. But I'm trying to figure out a way to get it out of the cart. I have a chain hoist & could do it if I removed the cage, but haven't decided if that was the way to go yet. To make it really challenging I tore up my rotator cuff a few weeks ago, surgery is Thursday to repair the supraspinatus muscle that has completely detached & is hiding under my shoulder blade. So I'm working with 1 good arm & a 1 lame arm at the moment. |

Ouch! I had back surgery this summer and still don't have my strength back.
Maybe you can pull the blower fan housing and see if the flywheel is loose? Prior backfire may have sheared the key and it finally loosened up. A few 8mm-headed screws and you can rule that out or smile. |

pull a plug and check piston movement by sticking a wooden dowel in the hole and turning it over by hand. best of luck!

Re: So I think I grenaded the Honda GX670 in my cart today
Got it on the bench tonight.
I pulled the spark plugs & looked inside, felt around with a screwdriver. One side looked and felt solid, like the top of a piston. Nothing loose. Plug even looked great. Other side must have been all the way down because I couldn't see the top of the piston at all. Pulled the cover over the stator/flywheel. Things looked good to the uneducated eye. Nothing broken or loose. Hard to see in the pic, but the starter gear & the flywheel teeth looked good. Pulled both valve covers & found this.... on both sides. Now I'm confused. Maybe a broken push rod? But two?? Maybe a cam problem? |

that doesn't look too good, looks like it over rev'd and the pushrods/valve springs couldn't handle it. Good luck with your repairs

So full rebuild? No way that can be just a cam replacement
