V twin vs Clone
I'm sure this has been addressed several times but having trouble finding responses. I'm in the mood to upgrade motors I have been looking at vegas carts. Trying to figure out which way is the best most economical way to go.
I have a 91 club car carryall 2 with a 341cc flat head motor in it. I have lifted it 6in with 26/12/12 tires on it. As far as cost wise it seems that they are pretty much the same. But the videos I see it seems like the clone motor is more powerful. Is one motor better than the other motor? Do you have to rebuild the clone motors like you do 2 strokes? Need advice! Need more power and torque! Tired of the motor I have but it will be for sale soon. Thanks . |

Re: V twin vs Clone
If you need more power and torque, go with a v-Twin.

Re: V twin vs Clone
Vegas Carts 460: excellent repower for stock carts, no need for lift, great mid range and top end power with the cam and valvetrain upgrades, will get the job done better than stock, most economical "kit" on the market, a little bit loud unless you use an automotive type muffler, electric starter not the best, best to use with the starter/gen since there's no alternator built in.
Vanguard Vtwin: excellent low end torque, blows the clone away, runs super smooth and quiet, can use stock muffler and air filter, good starter, good 16a alternator built in, 16hp version is easy to find used, but if you buy new get the 23hp version, expensive kits, if it's built right it will outperform the clones any day, in stock form they have more torque than the clones but fall flat at higher rpm. Cart Parts Plus seems to have the best kits IMO. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/clone...40-review.html http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/big-b...-vanguard.html http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/big-b...-vtwin-g1.html |

Re: V twin vs Clone
If you compare new to new from vegascarts, high output clone and installation kit $1259 versus 23hp stock vanguard and installation kit $1800.And if you use some used engine less.I searched around yesterday for others selling the 23hp vanguard with or without the kit and vegascarts was several hundred dollars less. You don't say how you use your cart but if you use on road or in a campground the clones is plenty powerful enough.Off road most of these guys prefer the vanguards torque.

Re: V twin vs Clone
I've had both.
I prefer the 16hp Vanguard. Use it around the yard, take the trash cans out, haul firewood, camping, hunting, and trail riding. My engine is stock at the moment, goes 25mph and gets there quickly, is quiet and will spray gravel and grass off idle. My VC440 was way more powerful than stock, but not as powerful as the Vtwin at low rpm. It pulls hard in the middle and top and runs great there. My VC440 cart did over 40 mph and prob would go more if I pushed it. It revved easily to 6500 with the rod and pushrods. Both installs I made the mounts. I used aftermarket clutches. Both on the same cart. The VC440 will do anything the Vtwin can do, except throw gravel and grass all over the place, the Vtwin does that much better. The feel is different. The Vtwin has a more powerful feel at takeoff and will put you in your seat. |

Re: V twin vs Clone
Bang for the buck, a 420-440-460 clone is king.
The V-twins have more displacement. Single, with head cut, timing bumped a couple degrees, decent air filter and pipe, jetted up, wake up a bunch, even governed. |

Re: V twin vs Clone
Thanks guys I guess its up to me to decide. I don't want to spend the big bucks but maybe I can find a motor a little cheaper out there. I plan on driving this around the small town I live in and possible taking it on trails. Hauling brush or other things around the yard.
Again thanks for everyone's advice, I appreciate it and will update when I decide and get it put in. |

Re: V twin vs Clone
Clones are copies of a honda (the older version) gx390, 390cc and 13hp rated. The 420/440/460cc are bored and stroked versions. The 420 are rated at 13-15hp depending on what sticker is on them, stock with governor/etc. They are way cheaper for a new engine than anything out there. Since the gokart guys can fit them, they have a pile of performance parts for them and pretty cheap.
The vanguard is raced in lawnmowers a lot, used in buggies and other things so a lot of parts for those too. They cost way more new. They are larger engines and so make more power. Some like the sound of a twin better. They do have pressure oiling like most twins, though the clones and other singles don't have much oiling issues in normal/proper use anyway. You need a performance rod to oil properly at high rpm in a single clone. In the cart a stock clone will feel like twice the power have no doubt. The twin will feel like more but stock they have more of a truck like feel compared to the clone that likes to rev a little. A stock 420 clone at $300 and maybe $50 in parts (timing key, HD springs, advance key, better air filter, rejetted) plus some kind of header exhaust will run quite well and top 5K rpm no problem its the king of bang for your buck. That is what makes the Vegas engines good deals because they are part way there already depending on what one you get. You can mod the twins too, just depends on what kind of budget you want to use. |

Re: V twin vs Clone
On 26"/12" tires, you need the v-twin. Top end is nice but the low end torque of the v twin is a must with big tires if you want to use the cart.
