Default identifying a 16 or 18 hp vangaurd

Identifying a 16 or 18 HP vanny.

Here's my situation. I found a old guy (in his mid 70's) who is willing to teach me how to work on small engines. He's been doing it for 50plus years. I can spin wrenches, and weld, I do some of my own mechanic-ing, but I've never rebuilt or built an engine.

So I'm rebuilding this engine- one I bought from him. But he had it torn down before I made the deal.

He had attached a tag identifying the engine make and model, but called it a 16 hp. When I started to attach the tins, they identify it as an 18hp. Now I'm not complaining if it is an 18, but at this point I'm not really sure what it really is. He isn't exactly the most organized.

Is there a stamp on the block or some other mark which will identify it?
I can get the head gasket part # I put in, and the ring part #'s too if that would help. I'm guessing the head gaskets and rings are the same tho.

If it turns out to be an 18 I'll be tickled.

Thanks in advance.

16hp will have a 2.677" bore and heads will have "30" under the valve covers.

18hp will have a 2.835" bore and heads will have "35" under the valve covers.

The tag on the main shroud will tell you.(if it is the original shroud)
BTW... I'd be more tickled if it was an 18hp with 16hp heads.

Oh crud. I already have the heads bolted on. I can look at the valve covers tho. I'll look for the 30 or 35.

Thanks for the fast reply!

It's cast into the heads, under the valve covers. That will just tell you about the heads. What is the part number for the rings?
You don't know what the bore is?

I'll have to get the bags Monday, they are with the engine at his shop. I still need to adjust the valves.

No worries. Like I said this is my first rebuild.

I didn't measure the bore anywhere, ever. Not sure he has the micrometers to do it with. He may, I don't know.
I just honed it and put in the new rings like the old guy told me. I suspect because it is a "newer" engine, and like you state, they rarely wear, he figured it was good and didn't have me measure it. I don't know for sure.

The crosshatching was easy and uniform, no missed spots.

I'm looking forward to running it and seeing what I've built. or reassembled.
