Honda DX670 questions
Good morning. I am new to the forum and have just acquired a project Lifted EZ Go with the 24HP Honda Motor and Terra Toys front end. The cart came with the motor out. The motor was serviced and tested at a local shop last week. According to the receipt it got an oil change, plugs, valve adjustment and carb cleaning and adjustment and was bench tested. I installed the motor and followed the PO's instructions on wiring, I fed it a little gas (remote fuel supply because the tank is out) and the beast fired right up and ran like a champ for a minute or so. I shut her down ( ign switch off)and started draining old gas from removed tank and cleaning. About 5 minutes passed and I heard a loud bang and saw smoke pouring from the front of the motor (side with red shroud and fan. I immediately disconnected battery and removed red shroud to find that I had somehow smoked the left coil. It is swollen with a hole blown through and melted with something leaking out.
I am no expert, but I am assuming something is wired wrong! I have looked at the wiring diagrams for ign switches and have a good handle on that. I need some help on the wiring of the regulator/rectifier. I am also wondering if there are any other parts that might be messed up at this point. It looks in the diagram like the only thing in line with the coils is the diode but I want to be sure. I am new to carts and small engines. Although I have built cars (mostly classics) and motorcycles, when it comes to this thing I am a real newbie so I really appreciate any help I can get. |

Re: Honda DX670 questions
I have about same motor and long travel. The kill wire for the magneto needs to be grounded to kill motor. If +12v is applied to the magento kill wire, they will be damaged or blow up the magenetos. Your ignition switch needs to be a mageneto style, so it grounds ill wire in off position, a auto type will not work unless you install a 5 pin aux relay and run kill wire to the relay that is energized in the on position and ungrounds the mags.
You will need to check both diodes and other mag. before you install new mag. refer to diagram for connecton of diodes, one to each coil, white band end connects to coil. At the top of this section is a wiring diagram for 24hp honda, connect your rectifier/regulator as shown on diagram. |

Re: Honda DX670 questions
Thank you for your response jeffrun. I have ordered 2 new coils. The cart came with the ign switch attached (which is what I used) but also a new in box Prime Line model 7-01850 Ignition switch for magnetos. It has 5 poles labeled L-S-M-B-G. I looked up a diagram but I still don't know what each pole represents. Has anyone used a similar switch and know what each of the poles is for? I assume:
M=Magneto and goes to the BL\R wire that goes to the coil diode S= Blade on Starter Soloniod G=Ground I am lost on B and L |

Re: Honda DX670 questions
You have it right for m,s,g.
b is for battery, +12v hot feed to switch, l thats usually a I and that for the fuel cut solenoid wire on your carburetor, allows flow to main jet of carb. That terminal should be hot when switch is turn to "on" position. That I terminal is also where you can connect a aux relay for headlighs horn and other accessories and fues them seperate. |
