Default lift kit with engine swap?

Just today I started looking at engine swaps and it appears that do use the Honda or Vangard V-twin engines the kits require at least a 3" lift.

So what is the reason for the required lift?

My guess would be the engine is taller and the distance from the underside of the seat to the bottom of the frame is not enough?

I would like more power, but I don't want to lift the cart.

I see Vegas Carts has a kit for stock height carts but is designed around a clone engine. My experience with a clone engine in the past wasn't good so I prefer to stick with B&S, Honda or Kohler.

thanks for any input.

You guessed it. You need the lift to get the clearance. A v twin will need to sit lower than the stock set up on most carts I believe, there for you will need the extra lift. You may be able to get away with it with some carts, and it's a pavement only machine.

Thanks for the reply Morgan44.

I use the cart for a pit vehicle at the track and also pulling my car to the staging lanes.

I was previously using a borrowed 1991 EzGo 2 stroke. It pulled fine on flat ground but any small hill and it slowed down to a crawl.

Just last Friday I bought my own cart, a 2005 EzGo 4 stroke. Just got done all the maintenance and upgrades but driving around it doesn't feel much if any better than the old one. Our next race is in a little over a week so I should know better then how it does towing.

Guess I need to dig deeper in this forum and search for potential power upgrades to the stock engine since I choose to not lift this cart. Have a hard time believing I"m gonna be able to improve a whole lot on a 9hp stock enging though.

Stock compared to a big block is night and day difference.... You won't notice a small lift especially if you use larger wheels and tires.

The cart has 14" wheels with low profile tires. Would look pretty silly if lifted.

You could just use larger/taller tires...

If you use the 16hp Vanguard you might get away with it. If you don't have much suspension movement in the rear it would help. If it's strictly for the pits then just go stock height, lower the engine cradle.

My guess is maybe the throttle isn't properly set.
I've seen some carts that barely have any balls and some that seem faster, maybe its who messes with them.
Are your clutches engage ing properly?

Well we tweaked/preloaded the rear clutch then I used a speedometer app on my phone to measure the mph stock, which was 13 mph. I then adjusted the governor to achieve 18 mph which is the max recommended by the shop I bought the cart from.

Cart feels much peppier now thankfully. We will see how it does towing the car at next weekends race. I'll decide on an engine swap one way or the other after that.

Is likely you can fab a lower engine mount, someone with a welder can do it and you may need to change belt size. Anything can be done one way or another, its just a golf cart. My experience with the clone has been fantastic so far and power about double stock, the only thing it does not have is the twin sound. Sure twins are larger and make more torque, but for this cart at the price it more than meets my needs....not sure about your needs. I barely pulled a v8 I/O 19' boat on level lawn with stock engine and the clone handles it much better. Way too much for it have to be careful but it does move it around lol. But things roll much easier on pavement and this cart has 22s and has hit 38gps (stock internals yet). It would have more tow power with 18 tires/etc. Anyway, if you want a twin it can't be that hard to fab a mount and fit it in there! I made my mounts nobody had kits then, that was the easiest part for me. With the clone I can burn the tires pulling a 18' or less boat out of the lake, something larger I've not tried lol. A twin will do even better towing.

Your clutching has a lot to do with how any engine will tow!
