Default Kholer Command 25hp Swap

Hey Guys. I have a 96 CC DS 6" of lift and I am wanting to do a big block swap. I see online there is plenty of parts and talk about the 23hp Vanguard. I can get a 25hp Kohler Command for a steal ($600). I am wondering if it will fit? Can I use the conversion mounting plate for the Vanguard? Will the Comet clutch fit? So many questions and so little time.... Thanks for all the input!

It will not fit in a Yamaha G9. See the new thread about my Extreme hunting buggy in the big block talk. I'm dropping my swingarm to give me the room.

It should fit, as far as the Briggs plate from Vegas carts... Probably but not definitely. As long as it has a 1" crank the clutch will work. Be aware, there aren't as many aftermarket parts for it so you shouldn't rev it as high as you can a Briggs or a clone. You'll have to one of torque, but your top end will be less if you keep the governor, probably only around 21mph with 23" tires and using the governor...

I installed a 25hp Kawasaki V-twin in my G1. I had to drop the swing arm and cut and notch the frame on the clutch side. But does it fit? It does now and looks like it belongs.

My friends were pretty impressed with it when I took it down to the trails camping over the 4th of July weekend. I went anywhere their quads did although slower as I haven't entirely got the throttle figured out and the governor is still on it.

I also got some seriously funny looks from all the ATV and UTV riders/drivers. But it's a lot of fun being different.

As Rifter said, it will fit. Anything can be made to fit with a little changing and a big shoe horn!

The lawn guys do race Kohlers, but you will have to dig to find parts and mods they are not nearly as common as vanguards. They also race Kawasaki. Some of the minidragsters also run those engines, dig around on forums for both you will find out.

They are quite tall I looked at a 27hp Kaw L/C v-twin and its huge in height also, would have to drop a lifted G9 like 4" minimum to get it under the seat. That said its not that hard to fab a drop mount for someone with a welder. Making the straight mount for my clone was the fastest part of the swap using a mid welder and a chop saw, some scrap steel. But the kits are much easier to work with of course and save you tons of 'engineering' time if you have not done it before. On the other hand you can get a lot of help here, and you only have to do it once for that engine/cart then you get to ride it or whatever.

The kohlers are great motors and there is a strong aftermarket for them. It gets said frequently that they arent supported like the vanguards but i dont see it, mid west super cub, zach kerber and a handful more will have you covered on any part you need/want. When i looked into fixing a vanguard i had i found it easier to find performance parts for the kohler than the vanguard. Prices are about the same as well. Now they do mainly race the 18/20hp v twin commands but there probably is parts for the bigger twins as well.

The mounting bolts of the kohler will NOT fit the vanguard plate. You will probably be able to use the flywheel side bolt holes but need to drill new holes for the output side.

Like chevydmax i have a "18" hp command v twin kohler in my club car. They are a lot of fun!

And like chevydmax said, there is limited options for the larger cranks. I pulled my crank out and had it turned to 1" so i can use the comet 780 clutch.
