Default 23 HP Vanguard Hill Climbing/Speed

Okay I've been testing out the new build around where we live. The cart is pretty powerful. Seems to be a top speed of 21. This is without a governor on the differential. I figured it would go a bit faster, but I guess that's about right? Gets there quick though! The cart pulls moderate hills very well with the 36 degree clutch. However, when going up a steep hill the cart slows down about halfway and creeps ups the hill at about 10 mph. It almost feels like the clutch is kicking out? How should the cart feel?

You definitely have something going on. I can pull a decent hill at 21mph with my clone and two people. I also hit 37mph on flat ground. Still have the engine governor? Is the belt too loose?

How steep of a hill are you talking about? If it's a backwoods deer trail type hill, yeah I've hit some that are pretty freaking steep, I can't see any cart going faster than 10 mph on them. Even with a Vanguard engine these carts are under powered compared to an atv or a RZR. So you might want to compare with another machine and see how it does. You might be fine.

And speed at 21? Mine tops out at around 29 mph without the governor on the engine and without a rev kit. With a rev kit I'm betting I'd top out at 40-42 mph and she'd be screaming. Do you still have the governor on the engine?

Yes it is governed at the stock 3600 RPM. I believe the belt is tight enough, I can't remove it without loosening the engine mount bolts. The hill I'm talking about is very steep and this is with two people on the cart.

You're prob ok then. 21 mph at 3600 rpm is right where it should be. When you are climbing that hill, is the rpm at 3200-3600? If so, the clutches are working perfectly because their job is to keep the engine in the "sweet spot" as far as torque goes. So the 10 mph up that hill is prob all you're going to get. Not bad though, it made it right? LOL

Haha yes it made it and would have kept going! While I don't have a tach yet, I'm assuming by sound that the engine rpms are staying around those numbers! In three years when the warranty runs out I plan to hop the motor up some. Thanks for the quick replies!

If you wait until the warranty runs out to mod the engine, you'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner...

You're right! Well the rev kit is tempting, considering it could be removed if I had too. Might find a little hidden potential with it!

But do get some sort of tach so you won't be guessing about your rpms.

Get the rev kit, get that motor running up into the 4500 range and you won't believe the difference, I am running a 16hp vanny with 22 inch tires and I am getting around 27 on flat ground and 15+ up some pretty dang steep hills with 2 of us on it.
