Default Secondary clutch adjustment

G16 with Vanguard motor, stock Yamaha spring. I loaded the spring on B-3. I'm just wondering how everyone else may have their clutch set and response from it. I seem to have pretty good results but feel I'm missing out on more low end.

Was thinking about going to Plowmans for the whole secondary-up they sell with machined disc, shoes, etc for big blocks. Was told this will make the cart have more torque, plus I'm sure my ramp shoes are worn since they are stock and never been replaced.

B-3 is also the setting that I am using with a 16hp Vanguard. It's been working pretty good. Are you using a 1 3/16 wide belt? Is the belt to tight or loose?

Same width belt but after a bit of trailing this summer I've been noticing some slippage maybe? Seems to slip when on a big incline from dead stop. I remember with my stock engine and plowmans hot set up and black spring I could be stopped on a hill and it would pull like crazy from a dead stop. Not so much from my new set up. Feels like slippage on belt but the play in belt seems fine. I got the belt from COP when I did my swap. I am wondering if the belt is wrong lenght because the engine mounts and engine have not moved.

I can spin the wheels in grass and gravel but don't have much take off on pavement. Guess I am looking to pop the wheels off ground a bit....

I'm running a clone I think B4, or whatever is two steps up from stock B2. But with a 94c and the clutch seems to want much different things than the stock clutch on it before which worked fine at B2 with the clone. It will pop the wheels off about 8" if I hold the brake a couple seconds, it was about the same with the stock clutch but I've changed setup on this 94 a hundred times lol just to get it here.

You should get the secondary working right, I mean the ramps and shoes need to be in good condition to perform the best. However engagement is mostly in the primary not the secondary. It determines how hard it takes off. The secondary is mostly belt tension and back shifting. But if you have a problem with either clutch causing it to stick or otherwise not shift properly hard to say what you have it will screw everything up.

Adjusting or changing the spring in the secondary will mostly change the rpm at part throttle. More preload makes it rev more at part throttle, which will make it snappier, make more noise, take more fuel, but jump better when you gas it. Its nicer on trails to have it tighter. Umax spring will also do this nicely for a yamaha.

Also have to make sure the engine is not moving under torque. Older yamaha had a tension cable, but some swap kits get rid of all that and solid mount the engine anyway.

A couple things I been noticing since the big block swap:

When shifting into reverse or forward I seem to get a clunk like it is engaging after shifting the transmission and I push the pedal. It seems to rev a bit then catch and go so as of late I feather the pedal a bit so as to not have it "clunk into gear" This may or may not be due to the Plowmans posi rear end. I keep thinking it may be locked and then unlocking when I shift back and forth into forward /reverse. Only happens when shifting into gears. I wouldn't think anything is loose. I did change the rear end gear oil this spring and replaced all my stock bolt on the ring gear with grade 8 and blue lock tight. No metal shavings and oil was clear.

I still can scoot on the top speed.

I'm going to check the secondary again this week. Take it apart and see what's going on. Maybe change the setting to B-4 instead of B-3 . Before I go that far thought I think a call into Don at Plowmans would help.

Again, this all has recently been happening after a few months of running the cart mostly off-road and I have been pushing it as well. I built it to be pounded so this first "season" is the test to see how the big block and drive train perform.

Called Don, he's out till the 15th so I'll do some checking on the secondary and belt myself. Going to take off the belt and measure to start.

This is the belt that comes with the CCP G16 kit.

That's the one I have. I made my own motor mounts so I may need to re-measure the belt to make sure its the right length. Doesn't take much to put it on or take it off, to me it seems kinda loose.

The kit--for a G16-- utilizes the original mounting holes for the engine, with billet blocks under the Vanguard to raise and level it a little bit.

Yeah, I seen that but went ahead and made my own. Its pretty close to that design.
