Default 23 hp vanguard valve adjustment

Before I did the adjustment they where at .010 to .012. Adjusted them to .005.Runs a little smoother but seems to have lost just a little bit of power. Is that normal?

It is possible, having lash set loose will pick up torque but lose hp, set tight will increase hp and lose torque. You must have a pretty good butt meter to feel any difference on an engine with 23hp though! LOL

Lash that is set too loose will move the power band up in the rpm range.
The tighter the valve lash is set, the power band will be lower in the rpm range. You are effectively changing the cam timing. Loose lash = retarded cam timing. Tighter lash = advanced cam timing.
Torque will generally be increased at lower rpms with tighter lash.
