Default Performance cam from CPP?

I'm looking to get a bigger cam for my 16hp Vanguard. I'd like to know who is using the performance cam from Cart Parts Plus and what your thoughts are on it? What kind of gains did you see over the stock cam? Was it worth the $220? Thanks

Field, I have it in my 21 Vanny. I can tell you that I have torque! It pulls great and opens up more power in the rpm range where needed. It's definitely, seat of your pants feel for me over the stock.

CPP has been doing big blocks for a long time. I can't say this for a fact, but I believe they have those cams made for them, just the same way that Vegas Carts has cams made for their clones. I'm betting they are "golf cart cams", meaning the power is going to come in early and peak out in the 5000-5500 range. I'd like to see the specs on it.

The "Cheetah" cams everyone talks about are really "lawn mower cams" for racing. I'm thinking they are more of a higher rpm power band, not really made for low end torque. Unless there are "multiple" versions with different profiles. I'd like to see the specs on these as well.

With that said, there really isn't any comparing the two. One is a cam made for golf carts that has "usable" power. The key word here is "usable". It's cool to peel the tires all day long, but to get the power to the ground is a different story. My stock 16hp engine will peel out in grass, gravel, sand, dirt, and even tar and chip.....just off idle only. I can see just a cam change could make a huge difference in where I see that power.

I'm interested in hearing peoples opinions on this. Good thread Gary!

So did you drive your cart with a stock 21 and then put the cam in? What other mods did you do?

Did the cam come with any kind of spec sheet? Or were the specs engraved on the cam gear?

Andy, it's been a great summer at camp running this V-twin! I just brought my cart home and sometime in the near future I will be pulling the motor and on the work bench it goes. I'm looking to add some goodies. I will be doing a 2 bbl swap ( I already have the carb ), a bigger cam, some port work on the heads and a better flowing exhaust. Right now I'm trying to get some feedback on CCPs performance cam and the cheetah cam.

Sounds like we might have our own little club going here....lol

My friend Jake (chevydmax6) lives about 15 minutes from me. He's a good guy. He picked up a 16 vanny and just found a deal on (2) 2 bbl intakes for us both. So it looks like we all will be having a good winter!

I'm still looking for an intake! What did he do with the third one??? I'm not quite ready for it yet though....the only reason I bought the carb was because I came across one with the black emulsion tube. I'm gonna start on the inside of the block with a better cam and work my way out.

I ran the stock 21hp cam for about a month. Very strong right off the pedal and decent top end. I then installed the HP cam from CPP. The difference to me was more power through the rpm range. Specs on the web site says stock cam pulls about 2400 to 2600 rpm while this cam pulls 3500 up to 5500 rpm. So, yes I can feel the difference. It's an Eagle 280 camshaft.

No specs other than valve lash settings.

Other mods I have are the rev kit (must have for cam) and K&N air cleaner. I am considering the copper head gaskets to up compression but I'm not sure if I want to go that route. I figure with the mods and stock exhaust I'm pushing 25hp.

Having a good clutch and secondary also helps the engine use the power efficiently.

Eagle V280? Now that I look at CPP's site it does say that. Must be a custom deal, can't find any info on the net. I'm guessing it's .280" lift because the "Cheetah" cam is .310" lift if I read correctly. You never know what you find on the net, of course, but prob reliable. Might have to make a call to CPP to find out the specs.

I never got much from CPP on asking questions. Felt like I was bothering them
when getting technical and still didn't get quite a solid answer. Maybe it was me but I tend to ask alot of questions! Anyhow, the cam is great and the parts are spot on from them.

Don, from Plowmans was very helpful and kept me on the phone a lot. Although he does not care for the Vannys, he still gave me his time and knowledge. He prefers the Hondas. From what I can gather, he seems to re-engineer them more so that other companies that provide the same motor. I guess he has found a way to remove the governor and or bypass it to get up to 50+ GPS from a Yammy.

I prefer the Vanny in my case for ease of working on it and parts are all over...
