There is just as many parts for the kohler, if not more. Check midwest supercub and zach kerber, they are probably the 2 biggest. The kohler is a very high quality engine. Main differences i can recall is the kohler uses hydraulic lifters, vanguard is a solid lifter you have to adjust. The vanguard also has a ball bearing on the crank, the kohler is just a bushing. I rebuilt my kohler command 18 and i parted out a vanguard 18. Everything about the vanguard seemed tiny compared to the kohler. They are both good motors though.

If you want to see some crazy kohlers just search for tractor pulling kohlers. Kohler dominates the tractor pulls. I dont recall ever seeing a briggs on a tractor pull.

The 23hp kohler would be sweet, but keep in mind it will have a 1 1/8" crank or bigger. That limits your clutch options unless you have the crank machined down to 1". I pulled my crank and had a shop cut it to 1".

Id really like to get the 999cc kohler twin just for giggles and stupid torque.

To have that machined did you have to pull the crank out ??

Yup. You can probably rig it and turn it while its assembled or the motor is running but its not hard to pull the crank. And if your going to modify the motor its nice to disasemble it, check everything and do all the mods.
