It's not breaking the bank, but the extra coin could have cracked the bank.
That's how I have learned to make deals for Vanguard parts. If it's something I really need, I just buy it. If it is just something I think I want, it's a one-time offer. I know the parts that are hard to come by, so I make a reasonable offer. The parts on your motor that are hard to come by are not the heads. It is just the rockers that are hard to find. Not nearly as hard as the 2-barrel intake manifold though.

You got real lucky! Build that engine up and run it! I have the same engine, it's running though and complete. I paid $350. That engine in good running condition is worth $400-$500.

It sounds like I did find a sweet deal. Marathon offered a nice deal on it too. I just can't decide what to do. I don't want to put it in my G8 cause that's my campground runner. I don't want it real loud or obnoxious cause campgrounds frown on that. My G16 runs great too and my intentions are lift, tires, paint and flip it. So for now I may just sit on it and keep looking for a decent roller. It's not in my way and I don't feel like I have any real investment in it. I'd really like to get my hands on a starter and exhaust so I can see if it runs. Although I suppose I could start it without an exhaust. I couldn't get the dammn thing off of my mind last night so I slept like sh17!

I've even considered selling just the motor on G16 and using that cart as a V Twin platform. I just don't know...

I could be interested Mr. Mike, nor will I rush you. If you'd like to sell it, PM me - we can work a deal and a fair price. I've been looking around for a while and cant find anything near me.

Kustrud, keep the faith and keep looking. I had a VG given to me , he told me he thought it was a 8 horse Honda. It turned into a V-twin. It was fully dressed with exhaust and starter and everything. Mine was $25 cheaper than the OP

Does anybody know if there is a model number stamped on it anywhere? I'm trying to find a starter for it and there are too many to choose from. Every place wants a model number or a part number? Any ideas? Will pretty much any briggs starter work as long as it has the right amount of teeth? I don't suppose they ever changed much on the ring gears? I'm more concerned that the starter won't mount correctly or the bendex won't catch the gear.

They ARE VERY different.. I bought one on ebay in a hurry completely wrong, looked (and the description said) exactly the same with the same teeth count.

Some have a differently manufactured bendix gear with like a little plate on it.

As for the model numbers, I always snap a picture of the model plate mounted
on the flywheel cover. They should be etched if it has been painted.

Oh and as for starting it in a pinch without a starter... You could A. wrap a rope around the flywheel I suppose and start it for a few minutes..
but without the flywheel cover (shroud) on it..it is going to heat up pretty quick. B. You could buy or acquire the flywheel shroud that has
the pull rope attachment, and you would also need the attachment that goes with the flywheel (unless it already has one) that the pull rope engages.

As for the starter, I guess there are others here who may be able to give you the model number off of their sixteens and it likely will match, I just
know that if it looks like it, and the teeth count is the same, they don't always fit.

That's the problem. I don't have a flywheel cover. It's just a bare motor with the flywheel. So I'm trying to find the right starter for it. Maybe I can go to the local lawnmower shop...not sure they could help me either.
