Default 16hp Vanny (I think)

I found this on Craigslist for $25...Impulse buy. The guy said it's a 16hp Briggs Vanguard. He did not have the starter, plastic shroud, Fan that attaches to flywheel or the exhaust. He said he was going to use it for a mud motor on his boat but never got around to it.

It does include the flywheel, stator and the metal bracket that holds the starter and the plastic shroud. It appears to spin freely and have compression but I have no idea if it'll start without some form of starting mechanism. It also has some sort of PTO type pulley on it.

So my questions:
1. Is there anyway that I can tell that it is a 16 HP Briggs Vanguard?

2. Is there anyway that I can cheaply start it. Maybe adapt a pull start to the flywheel or maybe find an electric starter.

3. Will any electric starter from any briggs engine work whether single cylinder, v twin, horizontal/vertical shaft?

Here are some pictures. Please let me know if any other pics can help somebody identify it. Thanks Mike

Yep, definitely looks like a 16hp Vanguard to me. Well worth the $25. Pull the valve covers and see if it has the aluminum rockers!

Ok I'll pull the valve covers. Should I post a pic of the rockers? Is that a tell tale sign that it's a 16?

No. But the aluminum rockers are very desired. As soon as 1989Marathon replies, he will be able to tell you anything you want to know.

Looks like you got an electric clutch on the crank. Also looks like someone took a chisel to the nut that holds the flywheel on.

You can buy just about any parts you may need on ebay for that engine but may find someone here that has what you need. I'd definitely go with an electric start on it. But I don't know what starters will fit. I'm just getting into the V-twin vanguards myself. I did however put a pull start on mine as a back up.

Without the main shroud(even with the main shroud), the only way to know for sure if it is a 14 or a 16hp motor is to take the top plate off the carb and see what number is cast into the venturi. A 14hp will be cast with "130"(13mm). A 16hp will be cast with "175"(17.5mm). Removing the valve covers should reveal a "30" cast into the lower corner of the heads, although it is not always there.

I'll give you $50 as it sits, so you can double your money without much effort.

$50? Tom (G1-G9) already offered me $100 and I eat the shipping. Anyway I'm pretty sure this one has aluminum rockers. At least they look like it to me. If not they're some sort of cast. You tell me. Also it does have a 175 cast onto the venture. It also has a 30 stamped on the head. Here are some pics.

You have stumbled upon the "holy grail"
The heads alone are worth twice what you paid for the motor.
BTW, It's a 16hp Vanguard.
I'll make you a fair offer. $150, and I'll pay shipping.
