1994 carryall 2 vanguard 18hp will not shift into forward or reverse
HI, i have a 1994 carryall 2 with a new vanguard 18hp engine swap kit. Engine is in and drive clutch pulleys and belt are lined up good.when engine is running at idle,i cannot get it to shift into forward or reverse and stay locked in.when i try, example forward, it will start going forward without hitting the gas pedal.Same thing in reverse. It should not move until throttle is pressed.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The idle is too high, or the belt is too tight...

Yes, idle may be too high or belt is too tight! +1

Re: 1994 carryall 2 vanguard 18hp will not shift into forward or reverse
Thanks for reply.I have taken the belt off and measured it with a string and got 40 3/8 length x 1 1/8 wide.what size would you recommend going up to as i tend to agree that the belt feels a little tight. i adjust the idle down but did not have to go to far before it would want to die,so i think the idle was good were it was.thanks,Tim.

The belt should be 1-3/16" wide. How did you measure to get the correct length belt?
What is the idle rpm? How do you know the clutches are lined up properly? How did you check that? |

I used a seamstress tape and went inside the drive clutch a and around the outside of the driven clutch and added 2inches,that worked great for me.

Re: 1994 carryall 2 vanguard 18hp will not shift into forward or reverse
How do adjust the idle on a 23hp vanguard? Having same problem but will shift right if rpms were lower. I can force lower idle by pulling govener arm out to shift but how do you set it to idle lower.

Re: 1994 carryall 2 vanguard 18hp will not shift into forward or reverse
Well govenor arm has like 3 springs on which I thought was overkill but took one off and rpms went higher. Mine springs are gold and two are silver. Could take a picture if that helps. Thanks
