Default 16hp vs 18hp

I have a 16hp Vanguard that I bought a couple of months ago. I bought it because I couldn't find a 18hp or larger.

I haven't started the build in my '02 EzGo, but just came across a 18hp Vanguard for $500. Would you guys keep the 16 or sell it and buy the 18? Is there that much of a difference between the two to justify the sell/buy.

Thanks,
Joel

Welcome to BGW!
Are you planning on modifying the motor in any way? More rpms? More power? etc...

Thanks for the welcome. I've been here for awhile, just never posted. I'm not sure what my plans are. I use the cart at camp (5-10mph) with lots of hills, but venture farther into the Adirondacks when I'm bored. Looking for more torque and speed than the OEM engine. I don't see many used vanguards pop up in my area so that's why I'm asking. Or maybe the 16 is fine unless I see a 23? :)

The 16 will give you plenty of torque over a stock cart motor.
$500 is a little steep for a used Vanny.
Keep the 16hp and put the money toward that.

If you aren't sure if you'll mod it or not, I'd go with the 16hp version. You'll enjoy gobs more torque than stock, it's relatively quiet with a stock muffler, and there are tons of parts avail to mod it if you wish later. Parts for the 18hp are harder to come by.

That 16 will still put a smile on your face!!!!

Thanks guys. That's what I needed. I have to start this project now, maybe tomorrow. I bought the engine conversion mount from CPP and it just came in. I think I need a build thread :)

Check with Tom at CPP (SITE SPONSOR). I have never had a problem getting any parts for the 18/20 hp vanguard.

It's not that they are hard to find, they just aren't as plentiful as the 16hp parts.

Yeah maybe I should have worded that differently. 16hp parts are "more common". That's what I should have said. I've never owned an 18, but I didn't search for one because I kept finding 16hp engines and I took the advice of a wise Vanguard enthusiast. Sorry if I sounded negative toward 18hp engines. Wasn't intended that way.

Actually I wish I had a 23hp version, but I've never come across a used one. Maybe on the next project....
