operation workhorse repower
Hello all. I have a 98 ezgo 1200 workhorse. since I bought it a couple years back I have put a 6 inch lift, a hydraulic lift cylinder on the dump bed, recovered the seat and new 8 inch wheels on the front with turf tires, 8 inch wheels on the back with mud tires. I would like bigger wheels and tires but the smaller ones don't loose any torque I need for the hills I climb every day. I also have fixed all the wiring and added a 28 degree clutch. I use it on the farm so making it look sharp don't matter as of now. Four weeks ago I had my right knee replaced for the second time and have been working hard on rehabbing it so I can get out to the garage to start getting it ready to install the 23 HP vanguard v-twin engine I am going to order the first of the week from Tom at CPP. He has been great to deal with. Two days ago I went out and started to take the bed apart so when the weather gets warmer I can sandblast it and paint it. I would powder coat it but being on fixed income I need the money for the engine kit. yesterday I got the bottom of the bed lifted off and the old engine ready to remove. I am not sure about removing all the old wiring yet but I guess I will find all this out and answers to all the other questions as I get further into it. Today I got the engine pulled and some old wiring removed.

Re: operation workhorse repower
thanks TheNewGuy, I ordered the kit this morning and I was going to go out to the garage today and start pulling the rear end out so I can take it apart and put a new gasket in between the two housings but since I had knee therapy this morning and it's about 20 outside now I think I will stay in today.

Re: operation workhorse repower
I remember when my workhorse project started. It was great fun. So much adequate space in a workhorse to do whatever you want... I actually put a full size thrush muffle in front of the 25 hp engine.
I'll check back later and see how you are doing |

Re: operation workhorse repower
When I put the 25hp Kawasaki in my G1 there wasn't any of the wiring I'd need since I wasn't even going to use the starter/generator that was on it originally. So I pulled all the wiring off completely and made my own wire loom for the new engine. It took a little time but worked great and looks much cleaner than it would have.
Also think about putting in a fuse block and use relays on your lights and such so that nothing can be left on accidentally. Mine worked out great and I've not had any problems with the wiring since the install. |

Re: operation workhorse repower
I did start to remove all the old wiring. I do have a fuse box for the lights and fuel gauge. The dump box switch has a relay that is also on the fuse box. I plan on putting the new engine switch where the old switch is in the dash and then adding a headlight switch for the lights that where hooked up to the old key switch. I have always done wiring on cars and trucks so I will do a good job because if it isn't worth doing right don't do it. I hope to work on it some today.

Re: operation workhorse repower
Sounds like you have it all figured out. I did run my headlights thru a relay wired to the key switch. I then ran it thru a relay. My lights only come on if the key is on.
I also ran all my wiring thru the black wire loom that car/truck wiring runs thru. I bought some of mine at Harbor Freight but then found a huge pile of it my dad had been saving. It gives the wiring a nice finished look and allows you to keep all the wiring up out of the way. |

Re: operation workhorse repower
Update for today. I went out after lunch and pulled the rear end out to fix the leak between the axle housing. I got a scare when I pulled the skid plate off of the bottom of the housing where it was leaking and some lazy person in the past smeared some epoxy on the bottom of the housing instead of fixing it right. I thought it may be cracked but when I got it all cleaned off it is ok. I guess they done that to try and seal it. I have a new gasket on the way with the engine kit for CPP.
