vanguard 16hp cam choice
i have a quick question for you all with vanguard experience, i have a 16hp vanguard model 303447 and i have the governor removed, rev kit installed and the stock cam advanced 1 tooth, engine runs good and strong but want some more out of it, i have a 2 barrel setup that i will be putting on but i am trying to get some more insight on what cam to go with with, i am debating on a stock 23hp cam or the cheetah cam from precision, i do alot of trail riding with occasional steep hills, i do rev the engine out sometimes on straight aways messing around, i am just trying to see if the 23hp cam gains are good enough or if i should pay up and get the cheetah, i am also going to get the heads milled down .050 too, and insight would help, thanks in advance

Re: vanguard 16hp cam choice
The stock cam advanced one tooth is about equal with a 23hp stock cam installed straight up. If you want more get the cheetah cam. I personally don't have one but I've heard a lot of good things about them.

Cheetah, if your gonna upgrade. Field is right from what I understand about the 23. I have the cheetah in a 16, and it pulls like a champ.

Re: vanguard 16hp cam choice
I found my cheetah cam barely used on eBay for $150. I think they run around $240 though.

Re: vanguard 16hp cam choice
I wanna add a cam too but cant justify spending that much. Does the cheetah improve bottom end and midrange and if so how much?

I went with the performance cam from CPP. Haven't installed it yet though.

Re: vanguard 16hp cam choice
The way I understand it....improves power throughout, but really improves in the midrange to 5000 rpm. You shouldn't lose any low end power, might even see an improvement there provided you get the 2 bbl carb dialed in. Again, this is what I have learned from others. Soon I will know for sure.

Re: vanguard 16hp cam choice
Mine pulls like a government mule all the way to 6000 rpm. It's very impressive. I'm also running the 2 barrel carb with some other goodies.
