Just Picked up a Vanguard 18hp for my G2
So I just picked up a New in the box Vanguard 18hp for $600. Last year i put a Predator 420 i picked up from a member here in my G2 and it runs like a champ but i wanted that v twin sound and torque. Guy had a vanguard diesel brand new for 1200. I so wanted that but it looked pretty big so i went with the 18hp vanguard. Plus 1200 is alot of cash. Wifes already gonna kill me for the 600 but it was a deal i couldnt pass up. I love this site and everything I learned from it and cant wait to get this motor installed. Just gotta get the cash for a new clutch and the pulley for the genny.

Sounds like a great deal! Maybe you can post some comparisons when you get done, a lot of people come on here asking what motor they should put in.

I thought it was a good deal. Usually used ones cost that, the harbor freight one is like 7. I got a lot of inspiration form your posts sho305. I think I've read just about everything you have posted and learned a lot. Just got into carts a little over a year ago. I was just searching your post to see what clutch you used.

Convert it to key start and get rid of the starter/generator. Tuned properly, that is a awesome motor. That's what I have and mine GPS's at almost 50 mph and torque out the wazoo. Congrats.
Make sure to post results between the two motors. |

Re: Just Picked up a Vanguard 18hp for my G2
I'll for sure post my comparisons. I mostly want the torque and sound we are only support to do 5mph at our club. Mine right now is setup with golf cart style start but all I have to do is pull a relay and it will idle. Also has keystart hooked up. I kinda like the golf cart way. The new motor has a starter and a pull starter it's the older style red and black vanguard. Guy had tons of briggs stuff from weed wacker motors to that diesel. Said there was a briggs place nearby that closed awhile ago and he bought everything.

Re: Just Picked up a Vanguard 18hp for my G2
I have a 94c, mostly because I got a great deal on it. Though I did have to buy other springs and pucks it was still under 200 approx. Its not the best clutch but it does work nice offroad. It has issues going slow it wants to rev, but going faster or gassing on it harder it works fine. I kept the gen start, this clutch is an ezgo replacement model with the pulley. You can mount a Vegas pulley behind any clutch if you use a 1" shaft engine. The roller clutches are supposed to work better, the 780 gets good reviews also. I wanted a powerbloc but this deal came up and I tried it.
19-23 are great vanguards to use. My cart is used for all kinds of stuff I don't really need big power for it I just like to play with it so I keep on improving. I am amazed at the power and speed of the 420 compared to stock. Have to buy a larger carb and I made an intake to go on it, that is next project. But cart is waiting on a car project before it can fit into the garage and at 14f its too cold to heat the garage right now lol. Some day I hope to pick up another cart and make a trail cart it will have a vegas 460 or a twin of some kind, and likely an atv front, hopefully a cage. Finding time is as tough as finding a deal on another project cart. I don't really want an old cart. I don't work on mine as much as I should because I'm always using it. |

I ran the 18 hp vanguard for years in my G9, great engine, love it. I would recommend installing a rev kit in the engine though.
