A big block MUST have...
If you're building a Vanguard motor, do yourself a favor and go ahead and purchase a high torque starter. The stock starter will work for a while, but where will you be when it decides to not work any longer?
When installing a HD starter on your vanguard, you will need to modify, i.e. trim, the inner flywheel shroud to accommodate the larger starters size. This cannot be done while the motor is in the cart. Trust me I tried, and cussed, and tried some more. It just won't happen. These HD starters can be purchased from eBay for around $70 and are well worth the small investment. After putting my HD starter in yesterday I was pleasantly surprised as it spins my motor like a top and my motor has alot of compression. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of regret. A stock starter in a built Vanguard WILL leave you walking one day so make this much needed swap beforehand or always make sure you have comfortable walking shoes on. |

Yep, gotta agree. I trimmed the shroud bit by bit with a dremel and a small cutting wheel. Now, the starter can be removed with the engine in place.

You guys haven't seen any issues with the gear meshing with the flywheel?

Re: A big block MUST have...
You guys could try 4ga cables to the starter and ground, they don't cost much at the tractor supply and other places. When I get to my cart I'm going to remove both cables and measure them, use those on my stock gen. My battery clamps are shot they have to go anyway so might as well upgrade. If you have enough power at the starter it wont change, but someone should try it and see. If it does not have enough power that lowers the voltage to the starter and is harder yet on it. Early vanguards had plastic starter gears on them, yeah they didn't always work out so well.
