Default Vanguard 18hp cutting the shaft

I've searched throughout the big block area trying to find the answer and just thought I'd save some time and just ask. Does the shaft HAVE to be cut and tapped? I have a 93 CC and wanted to know why it gets cut down and how much? It's the 1" straight shaft, not the tapered.

Also, can I use the factory clutch off the original motor? Maybe with some shims or an adapter?

It's cut down because of the length of the shaft originally being too long to line up with the secondary clutch. Unless you can move the motor over enough to line up which usually isn't possible.

You have two options here. Cut and tap the crank so you can use your stock clutch after you buy the $40 adapter. Or you can leave the shaft the way it is and buy a new clutch to fit the 1" crank. Personally I would suggest getting a new clutch if the money is there. Are you going to convert the cart over to a key start?

I'd like to. I've replaced the stock start/gen a few months ago, but would rather have the key start. What clutch would you recommend? I'd rather not risk tapping the shaft.

So the 780 will go on the 1" straight shaft without cutting or tapping?

Yes. Your crank is 1" and the Comet 780 has a 1" bore. I think they make two versions of the 780. One is for 1 3/16 belts and one for 1 inch belts. I'm not real familiar with the Club Cars but I'm pretty sure they use the 1 inch? Make sure you get the correct one.

There's different 780's? So I'm looking for one with a 1" bore?

I'm not sure if they make different bores in them but if your vanguard has a 1" straight shaft then you want a comet 780 with a 1" bore.

Another question. When dropping in a V-twin, what is the distance between the Motor and rear axle? Should the distance be measured from the center of the motors shaft? And if I go with the Comet 780, what belt should I get?
