Default Found the issue

Well the cart has not been running correctly for the past few months and for the life of me could not figure out what was going on. It seemed to run pretty good when I took it to the coast last summer but then it sat a little bit and well we all know when something doesn't feel right. Well I finally pulled the engine to see what the problem was or if I could find anything, I started to think I was maybe getting valve float so I installed a new set of springs. Once this was done I learned more about TDC , some of this is still new to me.. Well once I was trying to set the valve backlash this is when I noticed cylinder 2 was barely moving while rotating the engine. At this point I had no choice but to crack open the engine all the way. Pulled the cam and started to examine what the issue was, well take a look at the pic and see what I saw. Note I installed this about a year ago.

Now the cam on the left is a stock 23HP cam, and the one on the right is a HP cam. Pay special attention for the 1st and 3rd lobe from the bottom, there was not junk in the motor, i.e. shavings and the tappets showed not signs of scaring.

Thumbs up Re: Found the issue

Dang! That 1st lobe is flat! I guess it wasn't running right!

I hate when that happens!

Glad you figured it out though.

Where is the HP cam from? I wonder if the oil filter is full of metal.

Andy, now I know what the cart should run like. I took it out yesterday after getting it tuned up while still in the cart and exhaust off. After installing the exhaust it took just a little more tweaking and it was noticeable right away. Currently I have two clutches the one on now is set for the middle hole and the other one is on the first hole. Want to play with them to see how the performance changes are. I have buddy locally running a 28 degree clutch may try and see if someone has one laying around I can work with as well.

Ron

When I took the oil filter off there I was very careful on how I dumped it, no signs of metal. I am curious if has happened to anyone else.

I am guessing in the crankcase. The pieces are probably big and never made it to the filter. When this happens there is a batch of them and not just one.My father used to work for TRW in the heat treating and annealing area.He would bring home examples of failed tested items.

What is the cause of this? To much spring pressure? Failed cam itself? This isn't the first time this has been posted on here.
