Default Comet 780

With all the clutch research on the yamaha thing it brought to mind the question what kind of life expectancy does the comet 780 have? How long have some of you been running them? What kind of issues have you had? I have put 150 trouble free hours on mine, but compared to the 21 years on the original G14 clutch that is a drop in the bucket.

I sure hope they are good. I just got mine in for my 18hp Vanguard build...

Good question Ray. I often wondered this myself. Now you have me wondering how long the 780 comet has been around.

I'd like to add to the question "how long", how much power has been put through it? I know what it's rated for, but in the real world how much can it handle. There's a few of us that have pushed it over its speced limit I know. I have about 50 hours on mine with a built 16 vanguard. (And I drive it like I stole it.)

Most small engines will last 2000 hours minimum if maintained properly. I would expect a clutch to last just as long.

I think in the case of golf carts the traction is so limited that even with the larger built up vanguards you really don't push the 780 to point of failure. Now in an all wheel drive off road machine that might be a different story.

That is great news. When you hold them in your hand there doesn't seem to be a lot of mass there but mine also has been flawless.

Most of the comet clutch tech started with sleds in the 60s, so its pretty well sorted. Sure seems like we could get an electronic shifted one that was programmable these days but alas, just like the carbs we all run we are still stuck in the 60s.

the only problem i have had with mine (1 year old this month) is the spider stripped off the threads. i just put it back and put 3 set screws to lock it down.
