Default Vanguard 2-bar carb questions

Hey everyone..been away for awhile but now that spring is here I'm back into riding season. After last years broken parts on my Yammy (roof/seats) I've been building a roll cage and a few other goodies for more off roading.

The Briggs 21hp has been great except now it will hesitate at idle or just when I start out but once shes going it goes great. After I let off the pedal it will occasionally backfire as well. I plan on getting into the air filter and fuel line and pump to see if anything is up but I keep thinking it is carb related possible the wrong jets or something? I got the rev kit and the CPP HP cam with a stock exhaust and low tone muffler. I've notice not so good throttle response right off but I have great throttle once shes up in RPM's

What's is a suggestion as to changing out the jets or going another route? My briggs does have a 2-barrel carb. It is a copy of the 23hp motor.

This evening I took apart the aircleaner and looked at the carb. Dirty all around which I figured. Cleaned up airfilter and sprayed carb cleaner and ran engine for a bit. Seemed to run better but still had some back fire after wot. I noticed to black knobs on the carb that could be moved back or forth. With the engine running, I moved them one way and then the other. I notice the motor seem to smooth out when the know were adjusted back. I assume this has something to do air/fuel but not sure.

As for the jetts, factory is 112/114 I believe. To possible get bet performance would I go up or down in metering of jets?
