Default Not revving up steep grades

I had my cart up in the mountains this weekend. I have the secondary preloaded on b4 and it did good but going up steep hills it doesnt rev up high at all. Kind of bogs down a little. Anything I can do or is this normal?

Doesnt B4 have the most tension? I would think b3 would be worse.

So b2 gives more torque than b4?

It's been my experience that with a good running v-twin, the engine will produce plenty of torque. I never had to go that tight on the driven spring.

You can try a umax spring, that will help for sure without being a huge spring like the aftermarket ones. And they don't cost that much.

The higher the number/letter the less the clutch shifts back, so at part throttle it will rev less with a lower number setting. Usually what you want with a more torqey engine but each setup is different. It should still rev harder under load with any setting, though it may get a slight more rpm with tighter setting (higher), at WOT. More preload and it will rev all the time, it will be snappy, but noisey and take more fuel also.

I would check the engine mounts and tension cable if it has one. If the engine moves towards the trans it will want to bog down. Try moving it away if you can, if the belt is almost dragging at idle that would be the best shifting for hills. If you go too far you lose top speed.

Worn belt will also make them bog especially if they get close to 1" in a lifted cart. A sneaky thing to do with old worn clutches is run a 1 1/4 belt it works better with worn sheaves. It can want to drag at idle more than stock size of 1 3/16.

If it slows down and near stops, you don't have enough power to do what your doing.

If you really need power at 5mph, put a cut sheave on it and that makes a lower 'first' gear you can power up near anything. I have just about gone over backwards with a stock clone going up steep hills with 22s on a G9. We were climbing ditches and old grassy dirt piles from a dump truck, and that was with two people and a stock G9 clutch, new belt, new cut sheave, stock spring.

IT doesnt come to a stop but i can never get the rpms up in the motor. I can be going along at 20mph hit a steep hill and floor it and the rpms just hang around 2000 and the speed drops. Even when Im on a flat road and I punch it the rpms just stay steadily around 2000 til I hit top speed.

2000 is way too low something is wrong with the cvt or you are not getting any power from the engine (which the cvt uses to determine shifting, low power the cvt will assume you are are part throttle and shift lower rpm). If the other stuff I listed is not an issue and cvt is working correctly, then you must either/both lighten the weights in the primary (or use a stronger spring if it has one but most stock yamaha don't, but I don't know what clutch you have), or preload the secondary more (B-4 or more) or use a stiffer spring there like a umax.

Make sure the ramps and shoes on back of secondary are good condition and sliding well, there is no stickyness in the shaft (check bushing and lube it). If you take the belt off you can turn it by hand, even belt on if you force it off the ramps. Check the primary does it have bad weights/rollers making it not shift, does it move in/out smoothly, lube it also. When you lube cvt make sure you only put 1 or 2 pumps in and it does not come out and get on belt, clean it off if you see any in the belt riding area. Make sure the belt is aligned straight, etc.

Stock G2/9 clutch would shift around 3800 WOT I assume newer ones are similar but never checked. With mods you should be shifting at least that rpm at WOT until it fully shifts. No doubt now you should feel it make more power at high speed after full shift when rpm go up higher. My clone with some mods makes best power at 4K you can feel it when the tach shows it, so I set the 94c to shift there it works great. I did mod my G9 clutch and got close but it would not shift at 4K even with holes drilled to lighten the weights.
