16hp vanguard not idling well
So I finally got my exhaust welded up and now I can't get the engine to idle well. It starts but won't idle.
I have the Rev kit in it and the valves adjusted. Governor is bypassed and throttle I straight to the carb. I have the Equus 8068 and I think I have it set up right. If I do it idles at 2000 and then when it drops below 1500 it dies. Took apart the Carb to clean. Got rid of the fuel filter in line. Plugs look good. Fuel pump is getting pulse off of valve cover. Any other ideas? Also, what is this black screw for. I think it's a idle screw but it doesn't seem to do anything. Joel Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The black limiting cap can be removed from the screw for more adjustment.

Is the carb bowl vent plugged?? If so, that could be your problem. Needs to be open to the air. That black capped screw is your air/fuel mixture.

Re: 16hp vanguard not idling well
The Phillips screw on the left of the carb in the picture is the idle speed adjustment screw, the screw with the tamper proof tab is the low speed mixture adjustment. These engines are Gerry sensitive to exhaust changes, try screwing the idle screw in untill the engine will idle, then pull the cap off the screw with a pair of needle nose pliers, and adjust your mixture. I recommend removing your drive belt as your idle could get quite high While adjusting the carb

Re: 16hp vanguard not idling well
If you did not remove the limiting cap and the adjusting needle, Then you didn't get the carb all the way clean yet. BE VERY CAREFUL, THE NEEDLE IS VERY EASY TO BREAK WHEN REMOVING LIMITER!!!

I have it working pretty good but now I can't get it to run over 4K rpm? It pulls strong but tops out at the 4K. I have the rev kit installed and should get to 5500? Fuel problem? Should I just rebuild the carb? New fuel pump? Ideas?

Re: 16hp vanguard not idling well
with stock carb my engine wouldnt run over 5k (HS rear gears and 23" tires, it just wouldnt pull it) with the 2 barrel carb change it will pull to 6 if it would hold together
