Vangaurd 18hp or kohler 20hp
I have a quick question for everyone, I currently have a 18hp Vanguard with 16hp heads and a Rev kit and cam advanced 1 tooth and governor removed, it's in a workhorse and moves out pretty good, I have a opportunity to buy a 20hp kohler for a pretty decent deal, do you guys think it would be worth the swap I know the kohler has more ccs, but I am kinda partial to vanguard, the kohler has about 500 hours on it and runs good also, I know I will need a different clutch because of the crank diameter but I have another guy who wants to buy my Vanguard and clutch and I will be able to buy the kohler and 94c and basically have no money into, what do you guys think

Not enough increase for the work involved IMO.

Re: Vangaurd 18hp or kohler 20hp
I think I am going to pass on the kohler, I would have to redo alot of stuff to put it in, I would have to Re drill my mounting plate for the kohler bolt pattern, redo my exhaust, redo my throttle linkage, get a new belts because I am pretty sure the kohler oil filter will be too close to my shift arm on my rear end, I had to remove the oil filter from my Vanguard and buy the block off plate because of that, and I like that vanguard parts are more plentiful, thanks for some help on my decision making guys

Yep, have to agree, not worth all the work. Now if you didn't already have the briggs and found a good deal on the Kohler, then I'd say go for it.
You made a good choice indeed! |

I prefer kohler to vanguard but as everyone else said, not worth it. If it was a 30hp or so it would be worth it.
