Default Taylor Dunn Gas Motor Conversion...

I have a Taylor Dunn Electric Truck that I want to do a gas motor conversion. The truck's in decent shape, batteries are bad. Have any of you ever done a electric to gas conversion on a Taylor Dunn? I saw a video showing on that had been converted, but it had no details on how it was done. I would assume a golf cart gas engine would be the easiest way to do this, and would have reverse, but I don't have a golf cart engine. I do have a few Kohler and Briggs gas motors out of old lawn mowers. This is what I would like to use. What clutch do you use? I assume the only way is a centrifugal clutch? If any of you have experience with this, I would love to hear your thoughts.

To do a conversion, I'd look for a donor cart and use the rear in the Taylor Dunn. This would set you up with reverse and allow you to use the same clutches as the cart. There will be a lot of fab work involved with converting it.

Make sure to post plenty of pictures and I'm sure you'll get plenty of good advice.

That is the best way, get a rear out of a cart or the whole cradle and install it. That has the secondary clutch, then use a 780 or stock cart clutch on the engine. Usually need a 1" shaft engine but you can make adapters. Yamaha or ezgo rear would be nicer with the larger belt. The CVT will give you a range of gears that gokart clutches don't have, since carts are heavy you really need them. Or if you can find a doner cart cheap.

Some have converted other rears even electric rears, its just that the golf carts have this figured out and it works well. Even UTV have all gone to CVT now and got rid of shifting for the most part.

Trying to remember, there was a guy here that put a diesel in something like this one of the 10hp ones. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/diese...sel-build.html Might give you some ideas anyway.

I converted my T-D B1-50 battery to a v-twin this summer....used Vegas Carts motor plate, clutch, and belt.....bolted in the Harbor Freight Predator v-twin.....used an EZGO Marathon 4 stroke engine cradle and rear axle/springs....

I agree with capt4903. Picked up a Club Car DS rear end and cradle, motor was blown so I threw a 301cc predator on there. Had to custom make some adapter plates for the leaf springs and shocks. Basically a bolt in connection. You will need to weld to do this conversion. Be aware if you use a Club Car rear end the clearance is kinda tight so I removed my starter and used the starter-generator.

I can walk you through the process if need be.

Capt4903 do you have any pics? We’ll trade ideas!

Here's some of the photos of the build.....not bad for a driveway conversion.....wish I had the fab shop access from a previous job....

since the Taylor-Dunn is basically a unibody constructed vehicle, I took 2" X 2" square tube to create a framework to build off of......Lincoln SP140 welder and Makita 4" grinder for 99% of the build.......

the EZGO rear axle is wider than the original T-D axle....I'm going to put the EZGO front axle on this next spring.....ran out of time...finished this up day before our annual fire convention......

need to slide motor forward to tighten belt.....looks like there is nearly 3" of slack in belt after convention cruising.....got 16 mph in campground with gps.....every once in a while I could get the clutches to fully engage and she'd take off......scary fast in the cart.....

327, I'd be glad to give you any insight on my build....it was rather easy....I ended up going with a key start using a generic, basic ignition switch from NAPA.....also ended up using a kill switch relay circuit to shut engine off.....the carb solenoid took too long for it to shut down......

used new 42" EZGO Marathon brake cables from the T-D equalizer to EZGO hubs.....

shifter shaft is a piece of 1/2" galvanized pipe run forward to drivers compartment with original knob threaded into it.......even wired in the back up alarm using Marathon micro-switch.....

I wasn't sure if the Predator 9 amp charging system would keep battery charged, so I picked up a blem Vegas Carts pulley off of Ebay and installed it with primary clutch.....all my lights are L.E.D., so current draw is low...no issues yet.....the future calls for more lighting, so a single wire alternator may be in the works......
