Default 16HP Vangard smoking bad

G1-G9 (Tommy) brought me down this engine and helped me install it in a G2. Thought I'd start a thread, since evidently this motor needs help and don't want to keep bothering Tom!

It ran great during CAW. Smoked a little, but Tom said it has to do with starving for air. Well, the cart was used at the campground for a few weeks and now seems to be smoking hard core. Just changed the oil and filter yesterday and put in what I think is the proper amount of oil - like 52 ounces. It's smoking something awful now...Which, if you mash the gas, all the smoke is behind you...not a big deal...But the people in the campground would say otherwise!

First off, I am new to this and other Briggs engines, but learning as I go here..

Question 1: This engine does not and will not start if you try to give it ANY gas. You have to turn the key and let it crank until it catches with zero fuel. Once it starts, typically, it will warm up, again with no gas, and after a couple of minutes you can then apply fuel and go on your way. However, this is getting to the point where it won't work any longer....I am having to crank on the starter several times before it will stay running. Do these engines have a choke?? I don't see one.

Question 2: What will it take to rebuild this, and what will it need? Rings? Bore it out?

Question 3: I see there is a sticky in this section for briggs parts. Is there a model number on the motor somewhere?Having a heck of a time trying to locate anything for this engine.

The model number should be 305447. 52 oz sounds like a lot. Make sure it's not over full. What do the plugs look like? Yes, there should be a choke, which may help with the starting.

And also the model number and type is stamped into the no.1 cylinder valve cover. Provided that those valve covers are the original ones to that motor.

Its everything that I got from Dan. Don was the one who gave me all the part numbers for the gaskets and seals. I didn't do rings as it didn't smoke when we test ran it. Sounds like we need to have a guys engine rebuilding weekend. Invite all the guys.

If it is starving for air, and got worse once you took it to the camp? Maybe a dirty air filter? Take air filter off and see if it changes the smoke. (smoke drives off mosquitoes,...so what's the problem?) They not hard to rebuild at all. Usually you can throw a stock ring back in it and it will be fine. You have to check the cylinder bore. If it is a cast iron sleeve the better. If the bore is egg shaped, scratched and sometimes has a wear line in it. If it looks good just put some hatching in it with a hone. If you have to bore it out, you will need new pistons to match the bore. Otherwise you will have flop and chatter and pull a wrist pin out. Check with a local small engine shop. I'd guess to rebuild a v-twin maybe $150. (it's been a while since I've rebuilt one. So take all that with a grain of salt)

I think my 23 uses 42-44oz.

Does the carb need attention?

Is the smoke white or blue/grayish? You might already thought of this, but did you check spark on both cylinders? A weak or intermittent spark can produce unburned fuel into the hot exhaust manifold thus causing smoke issues. These v-twins will run with only 1 cylinder firing correctly. Just a thought.

How much angle does your engine have? If you have a lift kit in it -- the engine may have too much tilt and the oil is up against the low sides piston. With too much oil and the need for some engine work -- this could be a reason for its smoking hard.
