Hey guys, need some speed, options?
Whats up everyone? Weve got a 95 Club Car Gas cart here at the shop we wanna make "street legal". Weve built 30 mph electric carts for customers before and we want something we can ride around town in, do errands, but mainly advertise in. Ive been trying to read as much as i can on here, but i figured i'd still post and see what you guys thought.
Im looking to get 35-40 mph. Maybe either a 16 or 18 hp with performance add-ons? I know you guys are going to mention the 18hp vanguard but im wondering what are ALL my options. We make our own lift kits, brush guards etc. so we will be doing our own work. It will have a lift and tall tires. Probably some 14-16" balanced honda wheels. Will i need high speed gears to get that fast? How fast will they take me with that setup? Like i said this cart will be on road use only, not off-road. Ive got a lot more questions too but i figure i'd say hey and go from there. Thanks! |

Re: Hey guys, need some speed, options?
I put a stock 18 hp in a 2000 Carry all with 20" tires which original had a CW fe290. After installing the 18 hp the cart ran 19 mph. I put in a set of 8-1 gears and went 30 mph. The new 18 hp was CCW engine so the cart was actually going forward in reverse which is lower geared. With the 95' you will not have that trouble since the original engine is CCW so you will/should actually get more than the 30 mph .

If you are fabbing stuff yourself, why not throw an atv motor in it. Like a raptor, thats a 660cc motor and it should get you up to 30

Re: Hey guys, need some speed, options?
Well we have a cbr600 motor we might try to put in one for a fun cart. Is there someone on here that sells/has specs on an atv motor? Would it be any more than one of the others?
So craig you think it would do almost 30mph without the gears? Some 8:1's would probably net me 38-39 then? |

Re: Hey guys, need some speed, options?
Ive got a fe350 with 6:1's and with the stock limiter at 3300 it goes 41mph..... thats with stock golf cart tires.... if your goin with 14-16in tires then you could upgrade the motor to a higher hp one with 8:1's and go every bit of 40mph.....if not more!

Thats pretty quick boosted. What all do you have done to that fe350? Thats the motor it came with right?
And do you have/need front disc brakes? |

You're gonna need more engine than that to achieve those desired
speeds... |

Re: Hey guys, need some speed, options?
Nope, no disc brakes... when i let off the gas the motor slows down the cart a good bit then i use the brakes... other than that the drums are doin the trick for now.Oh, and i forgot to add that i have a machined drive clutch with a 200rpm spring (well worth the money).... the actual motor was stock when i gps'd it and now ive got a uni filter on the carb and a bigger jet (still working on the exhaust, stock fe290 muffler is still on it).... but before those two things i raced my friends 48v cart with a 400amp controller 8:1's and a 5500rpm high speed motor and we were dead even from a stop.. Now i just Pull away......Its gonna be even better once i finish my exhaust.. Oh, and that motor you posted did not have any info on displacement.. it must be close or over 400cc to make 16hp. I got the fe350 from CPP. It was a great price and it does the job for me.... but ofcourse. More hp's is always better

Re: Hey guys, need some speed, options?
There were a few members that put those power max engines in club cars. I believe it was "old army" that did one, last I heard it was running great. He had posted all about building it but i'm not sure if those threads are still around. The site was hacked a long time ago and we lost many months worth of posts.
If your wanting to impress customers, stick a 23hp briggs with rev kit in that cart. It'll put a grin on their face that won't come off for days. I would guess you could easy hit 40mph with just the engine, everyone else that has done it said they did. My big ole workhorse cart will almost do that and I only have a 16hp vanguard in it. my goal was 35mph, you know, South Carolina you only need that $5 sticker to be legal. I wanted to keep up in traffic around town |
