Exhaust setup
When I first installed a 20 HP Honda motor, into my golf cart, I wanted it loud and proud.
I fabricated a long tube header for the motor, and ended it with a disc muffler, from Robertson Torque Tubes. It sounded like a mini Harley, and for a while it was cool. I was messing with the thing one day, and removed the disc muffler, to see how much louder it was. There was no difference. That's when I decided, it needed to be quieter. My daughter mentioned it to me too, when I was giving grandkids a ride. I didn't want it to be silent, but quieter, is better. My header is made of 1 inch diameter pipe, going to a 2 inch collector, so I started looking for something that would work, in my case. I found a muffler, from Flowtech, it's a 50050FLT Raptor Turbo muffler. I bought some mandrel bent 2 inch exhaust pipe, along with a flex pipe, and started to work. First, I shortened the header way up, and cut and brazed (no welder handy), and got the whole thing to fit between the frame rails of the cart. The muffler lays sideways, bot still exits out the rear. Glad for mandrel bent angles too, because I could cut and make tighter corners. All in all, it came out darn good. It sounds nice, and with the increased back pressure, the motor runs better too. All I have to do yet, is remove, clean up, and paint the pipes, so it looks nicer. Here's a few pics. |

Re: Exhaust setup
That looks good and nice work!!! I'm in the process of fabricating my exhaust as well. Couldn't find the source for the header I was looking for so I just purchased all the materials to make my own. It's all in mandrel bent stainless, I have a tig wielder so I'll be using that....
If you could, would you make a video clip so we could hear how your's sounds??? I'm in the same boat as you as for as for not wanting it too loud, just a nice quite little rumble revealing the fact a nice little big block lives underneath the seat!!! Again, nice work and thanks for sharing it!!! |

Re: Exhaust setup
I had robertson make a header for my clone, and put a coupling on it so it rotates, then I mounted the muffler to the frame. Used a walker quietflow. It is not as loud as a atv/utv, maybe close to a larger lawnmower. Sound is more like a utv. It does tend to be louder at WOT and at quarter or less it is pretty quiet. Think it would be quieter with a tailpipe like most mufflers are, but its nice this way.
You can hear it some in this video, there is another video on there. Note I piped the airbox to the front cowl so the camera likes to pick up that sucking sound unless I turn to the side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4bj1weMSKw Build thread: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/clone...-clone-bb.html |
