Default pick a motor

Which motor should I use? I picked up these as a package deal for $300. They both have 1'' shaft with 1/4'' keyway.

The Briggs needs about 21'' of height. It has electric start. I think its heavy and I havent found any performance parts for it.

I would remove the stock gas tank on the Honda and then I could mount the factory generator to it and have elec. start and charge the battery. Tons of performance parts to be had.

Both of them run good.

no. the briggs is a 16 531cc, the honda is a 13 390cc. the only info i can find about the briggs is that it will last forever. I didnt actually want the briggs after I saw how tall it was but i couldnt just buy one, and I think it was a good price.

the honda supposedly can be built to 30hp. with a lot of money. I can also get high performance carb, exhaust, etc.. for cheap for the honda.

I think Im going to use the honda and make a bracket to mount the factory alternator/ starter where the gas tank goes after i take it off. the only thing Im worried about is having enough room on the shaft for the clutch and the pulley to run the starter.

it shouldnt be too much different than all the other ''clone'' builds, except the non elec. start motor. the factory cc starter mounts on a bracket so I think it will be easy to mount it to the new motor. I will take pic though.

The front end is going to be most of a polaris sportsman 700 for the suspension. the rear is going to be polaris rear shocks with a relocated snubber that will be replaced with one big heim joint to keep everything in check.

The cc body will sit on a low profile frame with the polaris suspension stuff in front and a heim joint hanging down from the center in the rear to attach the engine pan/swingarm to. It looks like Ill be able to make it fit like a glove. I cant wait to get started.

At least thats the plan for now.

Both are good engines, personally, if they both run good, I'd go with the bigger engine. I doubt you'll have a reliable engine if you turn a 13hp into a 30hp. The best way to get more performance no matter what is to start with a bigger stock engine in the 1st place. As you also pointed out you'll want the one that fits the best. If they both fit without too much trouble then bigger will be better. I have used B&S for years sawmills, snowblowers, mini bikes, water pumps, generators, compressors, lawnmowers, chipper, etc. and have never had 1 bad one. I believe maintenance is probably what keeps an engine running??? If you're really looking for 30+hp why not look into a snowmobile engine or something like that?

i never meant that i would try to get 30 out of it, i just meant that there are parts available.

Im not looking for tons of power, I just want to be able to drive through deep sand at a decent pace, like 15 mph. will 13-16 hp do that?

Deep sand, how deep? Heck I have seen trucks have trouble in deep sand :). I got my yamaha finally running{still need to post pictures} stock engine G14A. The only things I did were open up the air box, adjusted the gov, added an extra outlet to the muffler, added a washer to the clutch, paint and built a lift. My wife and I took it out the other day and it did fine. Still needs tires and spacers. The stock engine for this machine is only around 9pony's. Seems like a 16 would be nice 13 would be okay but the extra 3 would make a difference. I've been checking those 16hp engines out on ebay for under 400.00. If I can ever come up with some extra $$$$$ I will go bigger 16-20hp should be enough for what I want. Much bigger then that it'd probably just be cheaper to go buy a UTV with 4 wheel drive???
