Marathon engine change
Hey guys i need some help, i'm putting a 22hp predator in my 93 marathon cart. I need to find out what drive clutch to use that also has the pulley for an alternator. I'm sure you guys have done this, 22 hp has a 1" straight shaft, i haven't pulled the clutch off the 9 hp yet. Does it have a.tappered shaft or straight shaft?

Re: Marathon engine change
I would talk to Vegas Carts they sell a pulley that slips behind the 780 clutch.

Re: Marathon engine change
I wouldn't use the stock clutch because you need to use a tapered adapter. Not a good match with a high torque engine, usually the adapters will slip and cause engagement issues and possibly damage the crankshaft. I know a lot of people do it, but I had bad experiences using that method. Also the stock clutch is not designed for that much power and likely won't hold up, plus you'll be leaving power on the table with a stock clutch.
With that said, the Comet 780 will work well. I've done business with both CPP and Vegas Carts, both great companies, both lots of experience and knowledge. Call either one, buy the 780, buy the pulley and use your starter gen, and you'll be happy. I think Vegas is making an engine mount for that model also. Good luck! |

Re: Marathon engine change
Most stock GC clutches are taper fit, 30mm taper, and only those have the pulley. Other clutches can be taper or 1" and a few are something else. 30mm was very common on sleds decades ago some use different sizes now but they make more power too (over 100hp for example). The 780 is good on carts and you don't need an adapter or to cut your 1" crank shorter to use an adapter, and its pretty cheap comparatively. On top of that many stock GC clutches are worn out and don't perform well, or you need to change how it shifts and you can't very easily with a stock clutch. However if you don't have the coin you use what you have, adapters are cheaper. I think a stock yamaha clutch would handle a twin, may not be optimal, other clutches may not. The CC 1" is not the same as 1 3/16 belt clutches, I would not count on that to work as well though people are using them on clones.
The clutch on my cart I bought from a GREAT guy on here Its actually a replacement ezgo taper clutch but a 94c comet. Its an older clutch with pucks instead of weights. I have worked on it a lot trying for a good shift and its working fairly well now but been a pain to tune it in. Nobody seems to tune them for a clone, they work better on twins I guess but a clone needs to rev more than a twin. It does have a pulley and I still run the generator, on a clone 420 with a ported and cut head and 1.3 rockers, etc. I have a rod and cam for it, should be fun soon as I have time to tear it out and juice it up. |

Re: Marathon engine change
I ordered the 780 clutch, I also ordered the aux pulley for the charging system. Do I need a shaft extension for the 670 shaft in order for both clutch and pulley to fit?

Re: Marathon engine change
SHO in a couple of weeks I'm going to start taking it a part, I'll take a lot of pictures and post them as well. I have most all the parts now, I'll have some to get rid of as well, (engine, starter generator, stuff like that). I think its a 295cc 4 cycle with the clutch on it. Maybe trade this stuff for some 10:1 ration gears something like that if anyone has some.
