what are the limits of the 18Hp Vanny
First let me say that CPP has been a pleasure to work with! I bought their 18hp Vangaurd, I also had them install the "performance" cam, and the high rev kit. the engine Runs GREAT!! with my stock rear gears, and 23 inch tires I got to about 29 MPH around 5500 RPM. but that was just for a second, then I gout out of it.
My question is...what is a safe cruising RPM with that cam and rev kit upgrades? I would like to comfortably and with out worry of my engine coming apart at 30-35. can I hold it at 5500rpm or am I asking for trouble? |

Re: what are the limits of the 18Hp Vanny
I am not a vanguard expert but some the the lawn mower racers consider 5500 rpms and above the danger zone for the connecting rods and flywheel. They recommend billet parts in those 2 areas. Plenty of sites out there on the subject. I did a lot of reading when upgrading my B & S opie in my tractor.

I cruise a 3600 or below factory governor is 3600 rpm so I feel safe there I will spin it up to 6200 rpm now and then also.

Re: what are the limits of the 18Hp Vanny
Clone flywheels said to only be good for under 6K because they broke racing, they are better now but I'd still use that rule. Far as vannys I don't know, you sure don't have to put as much on them as a clone. You can't even put a cam in a clone without a rod. Just the same I'd say with any engine if you need to run top rpm a lot you should get gears, they won't break the bank to get them for most carts and it will serve your needs much better. I don't run roads regularly, but some people do and say gears work way nicer.

Re: what are the limits of the 18Hp Vanny
I know that a big block clone isn't the subject -- but -- its just that almost every company I deal with recommends billet rods with shell bearings when installing a HP cam. Did they install billet rods with the cam? I would be reasonable and say 4000 rpm max just driving along with spurts of 5500 rpm for a moment. Putting that much stress on your engine is just asking for trouble. The VC clone comes build into a heavy duty 10 bolt block and is much thicker all the way around. The Briggs is just a standard block.

Re: what are the limits of the 18Hp Vanny
You must with a clone, the VC460 has a billet rod. I've heard of a lot of people putting cams in vannys without touching the bottom end. I am sure there is a limit, I don't know what it is, but a clone rod will fail pretty quick with any cam. It could also depend on what cam you run in a vanny, what rpm. A lot of people on here say they ran 6K with a 18hp and rev kit, it was the best top speed for a nearly stock motor at one time. But no, I never witnessed it. And not many posts of vannys blowing up, clones used to do it when you screamed (run fast with no governor) a new one that was not broken in. But a vanny has an oil pump and a clone (single cyl) does not.

Re: what are the limits of the 18Hp Vanny
You bought the Hi rev kit and cam...drive it like you stole it I've done some crazy rpms with that set up. I even stopped the pull on the dyno at 6k because I was affraid the clutch would come apart and there was only a plastic seat bottom and a seat cover to protect my best interests

Re: what are the limits of the 18Hp Vanny
The rod wont take the stress very long and you risk having the flywheel come apart. Both are pretty nasty things to have happen. I run my basicly stock Kohler twin around the 3600 rpm when cruising. I have punched it to a little over 5k a few times but only for a few seconds max.
