Need advice yamaha g14
I have a chance to buy a yamaha g14 1996 i believe cheap. How hard are they to put big blocks in or work on in general. I've done a 1988 club car carryall 2 with big block. Are they the right direction to bolt motor in or do you have to use adapters like ive seen others do. Thanks

I have a G14 with the Vegascarts swap. Did it in an afternoon and couldn't be more pleased.

Re: Need advice yamaha g14
I can say that I have converted a g9 and it was longer than an afternoon for me.
HOWEVER, I knew nothing about the engines or electrical before I started. Everyone was kind and helpful and encouraging. I used a vegas cart mounting plate, clutch, and airbox. Plate and clutch are great. I don't like the airbox -- works fine, but it is tight getting it to fit in the yamaha without hitting the passenger shock. |

Re: Need advice yamaha g14
BIG difference between taking a cart that had been running and swapping the engine and some POS laying in a field somewhere with lots of problems. Also BIG difference between using a VC 460 that is all sorted out and ready to install in a cart than some on line generic clone engine. P.S. The G 14 does NOT have the carb to shock issue with the clone engine the earlier G series carts had.

Re: Need advice yamaha g14
You can do it how you like, I did two clones before kits and welded the mounts in I made. Today I'd try to buy a kit to save time, I'd buy a VC460 because its built up and runs much nicer in a cart and well worth the extra 3 bills. If you don't care about speed a 420 will work fine, if you want to save money a 420 will work fine, and you can make your own stuff mostly if you can do that kind of thing. All depends on what you want, your budget, and if you can fabricate stuff. Oh and how much time you want to put into it. I have tons of time into mine but hardly any of it was bought to fit, I made all of it. Even the header actually was made as a kit but I welded it together to fit, it came in pieces.
With my G9 I can say the stock clutch on a stock clone 420 runs fantastic. Its like it has twice the power but is just like stock. Once you mod the 420 it does not work as well, and the G9 clutch is not very adjustable at all. Another thing is if your clutch is worn out you better think hard about a new aftermarket one, yours is shot and its expensive to fix them or replace. Worn clutches don't shift right they don't work as well. So if you want a stock replacement and use a clone, or don't care about making it fast but like the extra torque, with a yamaha the stock clutch will work great. If you plan to do anything more to it think hard about replacing it with a 1" clutch. Though you can get comet replacement cart clutches with the pulley on them, they are 30mm taper just like stock you have to cut the crank and use an adapter. If you use the stock gen/starter its an option. My cart now has an ezgo comet replacement 94c. |

Re: Need advice yamaha g14
For a G14, the CPP kit would use the G2/G9/G8 kit

Re: Need advice yamaha g14
The last G14 VC swap we did was a breeze - granted, we stripped it down, blasted it and did a complete "frame-up" so the cart-hours were pretty serious but the actual time on the kit and install was probably just about 4-5hrs plus rewiring (with the Yamahas we strip the entire wiring harness and call it a "Re-Do", they're worth more intact on Ebay than the cost of a brand new Solenoid, regulator, and associated wiring plus the labor to fab up) ...
On a cart as old as a G14, You're going to want to factor in a few things, the mounts are likely shot or close to it so figure on a new set, the driven clutch is likely getting "there" too so just pop for a new one when You buy the kit from VC - also, depending on where in MO You are, it wouldn't hurt to pick up an OEM Choke Cable adapter and cable (about $35). The VC's start and run without a hitch at about 70-90 degrees, but here in WI they get stubborn and need to be warmed up if it drops below that 70 or so mark, the choke lets You run it like any other engine at temps right down to "Donuts in the Snow" cold. Do yourself a favor and skip the "Predator" route - no more RPM's than stock, really (not enough to justify the swap) and inasmuch as this isn't an opinion based on "Golf Carts", I'm on the third HF clone in 2yrs on our Log Splitter. |
