Default Briggs 18 HP engine build

Could use some input on this engine build. Was given a Briggs 18 HP engine off an old golf course mower. I have a single Mikuni carb and new intake manifold set up (Thanks Flintrock, then sold to Losthusker, then bought back from Losthusker). I'm thinking a stock 23 HP cam/ high rev kit ( the iski springs and rods don't add up to me). Would an advanced timing key or just the cam advanced a tooth be better? Would high compression head gasket's be worth it? I'd rather not change the starter because of the higher compression. This will be coming apart so I'd like to have all the parts here when I put it all back togeather. Do I have a build car for it, not at thus time, but there is alway's tommarrow and only a "dream" away for me. Thanks guy's

If using the stock cam you will be ok it has the factory decompression for start up. I would use the thinner head gaskets and 16HP heads light port work.

The thinner copper gasket could get you a couple points on the compression scale. Like 8.9 to 1 to a higher scale of 9.1 to 1 compression ratio.

I have an extra set of 16 heads that I could swap you for other things if you need a set. I think the set that I have came from Hook'm. I tried to give you a call the other night but you didn't answer again This weather pack connection works great also for wiring.

Teardown/ degrease/clean. Why do people use RTV when you have a perfect gasket? Bore and pistons look good. There will be some changes, color and a few other mod's

Wish YOU lived closer to me What's the scoop on the 16 heads? Do they have those aluminum rockers?

I've seen Blue RTV blow engines up by plugging oil and water passages. Most that use RTV think if it squirts out that all is well. RTV squeezes down to about .001 so you don't need much. What ever is on the outside -- the same amount is on the inside. Wait a few hours and you can pull off the extra sealer in a long blue worm. That much is on the inside of your fresh build just looking for the right moment to mess you up.
