Hydraulic Brakes & More
I'm starting this thread over again, had 2 previous deleted so I could add some upgrades besides the brakes. I've talked about wanting travel speed with less engine rpm. I was headed to changing the gears in the transmission but decided I would increase the tire size. I was running 20x8x10 turf type tires and averaged 24-26 mph at 4000 rpm. I'm setting up a pair of 25x10x12 on a new set of rims [8.5x12] This brought me to a new problem -- stuffing these tires under my cart. I cut the swing arm loose and made a new cross member to locate it 10 inches back from its original position. I cut the rear frame off and made new shock mounts.
Now on to the 4 wheel disc brake setup I'm building. I started with a Jake's brake kit for a G29. I had to make my own caliper hanger, used the G29 hanger for a starting pattern. The mount studs were to long so I cut them down and threaded them to the bottom. Now there the right length so the rotor clears the mount bolts. |

Re: Hydraulic Brakes & More
I moved the swing arm 10 inches back to relocate my engine so I can work on it without standing on my head. This made room for my new tires. At first I had a little problem getting the nuts off the swing arm bolts. I cut the mounts loose with a sawzall and machined them square so I used them over again. A little heat on the nuts and the swing arm came right off and the bolts were clean and no bushing rot.

Re: Hydraulic Brakes & More
I had always figured that if you go faster you had to stop faster. When I did my VC460 upgrade I had decided to install front brakes and improve the suspension for better handle. I worked a Jakes 7 inch double a arm lift kit into my cart. Its been lowed and have 5/8 hiem joints as steering knuckles. I used Harley shocks on the front, the floorboard height is about 8 inches. Because of health issues a high lifted cart is out of the question.

Re: Hydraulic Brakes & More
I've been working out some bugs in my master cylinder - pedal assembly. I was going to mount my master cyl where the brake cables were on the frame. There were some clearance issues. Now the whole unit bolts in so it can be worked on in the future. The other problem I have is --- I'm in the hurry up and wait mode. Little parts are a pain how they can completely stop you. It is what it is, I'm blessed.

Re: Hydraulic Brakes & More
I had some problems trying to mount the master cylinder as was first set up. In the end I made a pedal assembly that bolts in place. Holds the master cylinder lower then the first mount. I'm still wait for a special yoke for the push rod. Used a brake light switch to hold one line in place. I have to rework the front line setup for better steering flex.

Re: Hydraulic Brakes & More
After the brake work and the 10 inch stretch I got the engine put back in and mostly hooked back up. I was able to get my Aussie Speed valve cover set up and bolted on. One of my friends [Dave] talked about routing the check valve [crankcase vent] into the intake tract like a car, so that's what I did.
I have a confession -- after all I've taught about vacuum fuel pumps and how much better an electric pump is -- this last summer on a day the temp was about 95 degrees my pump vapor locked. I was alone and out in the middle of nowhereland. I got a little scared but God was looking out for me and for what ever reason the farmers who's land I was on showed up and helped me out. So now I'm experimenting with a pulse pump. Looks like a blue octopus with all the hoses LOL. I have to finish the shift lever and set up my choke cable. Still have a long way to go. |

Re: Hydraulic Brakes & More
I needed suspension support parts - I had no money for more cause I already spent it on these cheap cool looking junk shocks. There from ebay -- "RFY brand and they don't hold much weight. So -- I doubled them up and reduced the spring load to the top and they work great now. Still have more to do, Have to shorten some of my brake lines.

Re: Hydraulic Brakes & More
There are a lot of things to do and change when your applying for a VIN number. I made my all wheel disc brakes but needed a parking brake that would hold the load. I went old school with my handle and lock system. Got my brake cable equalizer from Speedway Motors. This setup has to stop the vehicle 25 mph to zero in 75 feet.
